This is the Kentucky rare bird alert, sponsored by the Kentucky
Ornithological Society. This update is current as of October 18, 2006
at 11:00 AM EDT. This is a summary of the sightings posted at
http://www.biology.eku.edu/kos.htm , with additional information on the
location and/or dates of the rare and unusual. The highlights of this
update are:
This week the migrating warblers and shore birds are diminishing and the
sparrow, wrens, nuthatches, sapsuckers, and water fowl are increasing.
Noted shorebirds included a STILT SANDPIPER at Fishing Creek Recreation
area in Pulaski County; a DUNLIN at Cedar Creek Lake in Lincoln County;
a single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER at Jonathan Creek in Calloway County; and
an AMERICAN BITTERN in Pulaski County.
There was also a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH observed at Mammoth Cave, and back
on the 6th a single VEERY was noted in Cherokee Park in Louisville.
On a field trip to the sloughs in Henderson County on the 14th of
October 93 species were totaled with the following being some of the
highlights: LEAST BITTERN, AMERICAN BITTERN, KING RAIL, VIRGINIA RAIL,
SORA, 10 DUNLIN, SEDGE WREN, MARSH WREN, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW,
several BALD EAGLE, and a MERLIN.
