SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Many reports continue to come in for the STREAK-BACKED ORIOLE at the
Desert Studies Center in Zzyzx. The last posted report was Oct. 16. A
male and female PROTHONOTARY WARBLER also continue to be seen in that
location, as well as a TENNESSEE WARBLER. Two Redlands birders also
reported a PALM WARBLER and a SOOTY FOX SPARROW near the bath house in
Zzyzx, and a juvenile RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER along Zzyzx Rd.

From behind the Denny’s in Baker, Sandy Koonce wpotted a MAGNOLIA WARBLER,
a BOBOLINK, and 10 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH
also continues at that location.

Todd McGrath spotted the continuing CAPE MAY WARBLER at Horsethief Spring
on Mon., Oct. 16.

Dave Goodward reported on a birdy day at Glen Helen Regional Park on Oct.
16, when he was a female-plumaged INDIGO BUNTING by the bridge to the
island, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the back end of the oak/sweet gum grove,
and a juvenile GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.

Howard King visited the Tees and Trees Golf Course in Barstow on Oct. 14,
where he saw a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER, as well
as two WOOD DUCKS at the sewage ponds. At the San Jacinto Wildlife area he
saw an EASTERN PHOEBE at Pond B west of the parking lot.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Roger Higson sent in a moving report of a group of 277 SWAINSON’S HAWKS
above a field being mowed in Blythe on Oct. 16.

Chet McGaugh found an ‘ALEUTIAN” CACKLING GOOSE at Desert Center on Oct.
14, and a possibly continuing CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the Cactus City
south rest stop.

Madeline Bauer reported a MERLIN at the top of the tallest tree at 66th
and William in Mira Loma. She noted this was about a week earlier than her
first sightings of this bird in previous years. She said that more than
300 WHITE-FACED IBIS continue to head west around 7:15 and east around
5:30 over the river. She also forwarded a late report from Barbara Iyer
who saw a PRAIRIE FALCON on the telephone poles near the bluff overlooking
the ponds at Hidden Valley Wildlife Area.

A couple of birders have reported what appears to be a BRONZED COWBIRD at
Kelso Depot. Both of the reports were posted on Oct. 14. This bird could
use some confirmation.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

Guy McCaskie sent in a report from Imperial Valley and the South shore of
the Salton Sea. Birds sighted included one SOLITARY SANDPIPER at Kuhn’s
Dairy, 3 distant jaegers believed to probably be PARASITIC JAEGERS along
the south shore between the north end of Garst and the west end of Lindsey
Rd, one second-winter HEERMANN‘S GULL at the mouth of the Alamo River,
three adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Red Hill, one juvenile SABINE’S
GULL off the west end of Young Road, one hatch year ARCTIC TERN at Fig
Lagoon, the continuing TROPICAL KINGBIRD at Lakeview Golf Course, and one
SOOTY FOX SPARROW at the Wister Unit HQs.

any new rare birds or updates on any of the birds in this report, PLEASE
LET US KNOW. We can't update reports if we don't hear from you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
