In Sandoval County:
MW found a male MAGNOLIA WARBLER in his yard in Cochiti Lake Village on
October 16. It was seen by BW on October 17.
In San Miguel County:
BW on the private Ruby Ranch north of Las Vegas had an immature SABINE'S
GULL on October 17, with up to a 1000 WESTERN GREBES.
On the Las Vegas Refuge on October 17 he found a MERLIN and an OSPREY.
MB and NP on October 12 had a male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and an immature
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at the Conchas Lake headquarters area.
BW advises that the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is now closed to
birding. There is a new lessee there.
In Colfax County:
DC at the Maxwell Refuge on October 12 saw 11 WHITE PELICANS on Lake 13. On
the refuge on October 17 he had a female WOOD DUCK on Lake 14.
At the playa beside NM 505 between mile markers 3 and 4 there was four
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on October 12, six on October 13, three October 14, five on
October 15, and one plover there on October 17.
On October 14 at Springer Lake he saw 44 White Pelicans and 60
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS. 250 SNOW/ROSS'S GEESE flew over the lake on October 16.
DC at Sugarite State Park near Raton on October 7 had a pair of ACORN
WOODPECKERS still near the Lake Alice Dam.
In Union County:
BW on October 16 had an immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on Tramperos
Creek in the southern part of the county along Lovato Road with WHITE-THROATED
and SWAMP SPARROWS.
In Bernalillo County:
RV reported that the male EURASIAN WIGEON has returned for another winter in
Albuquerque. It was at the parking lot pond at the Rio Grande Nature Center
on October 14.
DP on October 1 saw ten RED CROSSBILLS at the 10 K Trailhead in the Sandia
Mts. east of Albuquerque.
In DeBaca County:
On the Pecos Rio below the Sumner Lake Dam JB saw a BLUE-HEADED VIREO there
on October 15.
In Roosevelt County:
From GK and JA came a second-hand report that GB again reported the EASTERN
SCREECH-OWL on the ENMU campus in Portales on October 14.
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose JP and WW on October 14 saw a
female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, and two WINTER WRENS. JB on October 15
found one winter wren and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO.
In Chaves County:
JH on October5 reported that the immature REDDISH EGRET is still present on
Unit 5 on October 11-12, and on October 16 on the closed northern area. It
was back in the Hunter's Oxbow area on October 19.
MB and NP on October 8 saw the AMERICAN BITTERN with a MERLIN and EASTERN
PHOEBE at the headquarters. JH had a flock of 200 SNOW/ROSS'S GEESE arrive on
October 12.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on October 14 CL and CCB found
a COMMON LOON at the boardwalk, a MERLIN at the Flight Deck and a male
VERMILION FLYCATCHER on the Marsh Loop. GF saw a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER near Audio
Stop 6 on October 13.
On the NMTU campus in Socorro . JS at Turtle Bay Parl on October 6 saw a
JUNIPER TITMOUSE. GF on October 13 had two OSPREYS at the park's pond with
many CEDAR WAXWINGS present.
At Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mts. west of Socorro CL reports that the
old campground is gone and the new one is nearing completion, with the road up
to the Langmuir Lab open only on weekends.
In Sierra County:
At South Monticello Point on Elephant Butte Lake there have been 175 WHITE
PELICANS and close to 500 WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES. JO and LL on October 8
saw on Lion's Point a BONAPARTE'S GULL.
In Grant County:
DG on October 12-13 made still another foray into the Big Burro Mts. near
Silver City and found many RED-SHAFTED FLICKERS, two OLIVE WARBLERS, one adult
GOLDEN EAGLE, a male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, two HUTTON'S VIREOS, a late ELF OWL,
seven CASSIN'S FINCHES, two CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS, and YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS with
DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
EL at the Tyrone Sewage Ponds on October 15 found CASSIN'S SPARROWS, five
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and many SAVANNAH SPARROWS.
CLe had a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER in Pinos Altos on October 7. The same day RS
saw an AMERICAN BITTERN at Mangas Springs. He had six HORNED GREBES on Bill
Evans Lake near Cliff on September 29 with FOUR immature SURF SCOTERS on
October 13.
In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon on October 7 and 9 CL and CBr saw a male ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD at the feeders that have been placed there. JO on October 15 saw two
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, a BROWN CREEPER, and about six HEPATIC TANAGERS.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
JO on October 13 had an unbanded immature APLOMADO FALCON south of Deming on
NM 11 at mile marker 25. LM looked on October 15 but did not find it. He
did see two HARRIS'S HAWKS in the area.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.
In Doņa Ana County:
JN near his home in Mesilla on October 17 found a singing HOUSE WREN, two
WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a couple of CROW flocks, and a fly-er
CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR.
CL had a CASSIN'S VIREO in Mesilla Park on October 15.
DG at his home in northeast Las Cruces had an immature male ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD on October 8 to 11.
JO at the Uvas Valley at a playa west of Hatch saw a PEREGRINE FALCON on
October 13 and a SNOWY PLOVER and WESTERN GREBE on October 15.
In Otero County:
CL and CBr on October 12 at the lakes had a HORNED GREBE with two
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. WW on the 12th did not find the grebe, but saw a singing
CATBIRD
and a BROWN THRASHER, with a calling SORA.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
WW at Rattlesnake Springs on October 2 saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. MB and
NP on October 8 saw a COMMON BLACK HAWK and a CASSIN'S VIREO at the springs.
In Lea County:
JP on October 14 in the area of the Tatum Sewage Ponds found a CATBIRD and a
PAINTED BUNTING.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On October 26 there is a hike on the Embudito Trail with Nancy
Phillips.
On Saturday, October 21 Southwestern Audubon will bird in the Black Range to
Lower Gallinas Campground and perhaps over to Emory Pass. The contact is
534-1450.
On Saturday, October 28, Central Audubon will bird at the Bosque del Apache
Refuge. Contact is Bob Merkel at 838-2296.
Also on October 28 Mesilla Valley Audubon will go to the Rio Bosque Park in
El Paso. Call Walt Whitford at 521-1358.
On Sundays in November the normally closed back roads of the Las Vegas
Refuge will be open for birding from 9 to 4.
The Festival of Cranes at Socorro this year will be November 14-19. Central
Audubon has put out a call for volunteers to help. Contact Jeff Myers at
