This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday October 19, 2006 with reports of WILSON'S PLOVER, SULPHUR-
BELLIED FLYCATCHER, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, AMERICAN AVOCET, VESPER
SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest.
A SULPHUR-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was observed briefly at Cape May (Higbee
Beach WMA) Oct 13 -- no reports since. Call the CMBO Birding Hotline
for details.
A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was discovered at Sandy Hook Oct 16 & 18 in the
field south of Gunnison Rd between the Marine Labs and Gunnison
Parking Lot (G-lot). Also in that area Oct 16 were CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW and BLUE GROSBEAK. Single AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were noted
at North Beach and Spermaceti Cove this week. An adult LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULL was near the salt pond Oct 15. A late CANADA WARBLER was
detected near the sewage plant along Atlantic Drive and a VESPER
SPARROW was found in the field northwest of the garden Oct 15. 3+
NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were noted this week in the salt
marshes at Plum Island. Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were flyovers Oct 15.
The passerine flight Oct 16 included 12+ WINTER WRENS, 8 BLUE-HEADED
VIREOS, 12 BROWN CREEPERS, 25+ HERMIT THRUSHES, 3+ LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS, and 12+ WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was
found Oct 19. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is
available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.
A WILSON'S PLOVER was found at Brigantine NWR Oct 17 at the northeast
corner of the east dike. Other species found at Brig this week
included 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, VIRGINIA RAIL, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 5 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, and NELSON'S SHARP-
TAILED SPARROW. An AMERICAN AVOCET was found at the southeast corner
of the east pool Oct 18. Another AMERICAN BITTERN was found at Leeds
Point along with a late COMMON NIGHTHAWK over Mott's Creek Oct 15.
The salt marshes at the end of Great Bay Blvd WMA had a SORA, 8
SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and 3 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS
Oct 15.
Thompson Park in Lincroft had CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Oct 15 & 17. Most of the
activity is along the hedgerows on the east side of the lake.
Birds recorded at Liberty State Park this week included an ORANGE-
CROWNED WARBLER and 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Oct 13; 2 VESPER SPARROWS
along the west side of Freedom Way across from the playground parking
lot, and 10 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Oct 16.
Allendale Celery Farm highlights this week were 2 HORNED GREBES Oct
14, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
Oct 16, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and VESPER SPARROW Oct 16-17.
Glenhurst Meadows (a.k.a. Warren Green Acres) in Warren hosted a
VESPER SPARROW Oct 15.
Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury hosted 10 AMERICAN PIPITS, 3+ VESPER
SPARROWS, and a BOBOLINK Oct 13.
In Warren County at Oberly Rd near Alpha 19 HORNED LARKS, 5 AMERICAN
PIPITS, VESPER SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW were noted Oct 15.
