This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for September 10, 2005,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are
given for private property, please call before going. Highlights are Roseate
Spoonbill, Baltimore Oriole, Carolina Wren. Laughing Gull, Short-billed Dowitcher,
migrant eastern warblers.

In San Juan County:
PK had an immature CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at his Farmington feeder on
September 7.

In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake on September 8 had an immature SABINE'S GULL, a
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, a SANDERLING, and three COMMON TERNS.
DC on September 7 had another immature SABINE'S GULL on the Vermejo
Ranch.

In Quay County:
CR on September 2 on NM 54 at the Texas line near Nara Visa saw a
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. Four miles north of Logan he had a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER.

In Cibola County:
CJG on September 7 he had a LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKER in Grants at the El
Malpais h.q. on Roosevelt Avenue. In rainy weather at El Morro Monument on
September 9 he had the first ever BLUE GROSBEAK, two HEPATIC TANAGERS, a
CASSIN'S VIREO, and other migrants.

In Bernalillo County:
DH on September 4 had a singing CAROLINA WREN on the Bill Spring Trail in
the Sandia Mts. about 3/4 mile up the trail from the Doc Long Picnic Area.
WW found it on September 7. GP saw and heard it on September 9 on the trail
about 300 yards below the Faulty Trail sign with a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and a male
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER a bit further down the trail. JP and JO had the
wren on the 9th 30 yards and 100 yards below the Faulty Trail a half hour
apart.
JJ on September 4 saw an EASTERN KINGBIRD at the Shady Lakes Trout Farm
near Corrales and on September 5 about four CASSIN'S VIREOS on South Sandia
Peak.
NC reports that a GRAY VIREO and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW were banded at
the center on September 3. JP saw the vireo.
BV on September 4 had a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at the Los Poblanos Open
Space on Montaņo Street.

In Torrance County:
HS on September 6 at the Quarai Ruins had a good migration of warblers
and sparrows, including a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
JO had a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Mountainair sewage ponds on
September 4. It was seen by JP and WW on September 5.

In Guadalupe County:
CR and BN on September 3 at Power Dam Park in Santa Rosa along the river
past the sewer plant had two immature female AMERICAN REDSTARTS and five
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS.
On I-40 at a playa near the San Ignacio exit (mile 263) there was a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER and a CACTUS WREN.

In DeBaca County:
At the Bosque Redondo Park near Fort Sumner BW reports that much of the
understory brush has been removed, so few birds.
At Sumner Lake on September 7 BW and JNM found two FORSTER'S TERNS, a
PEREGRINE, with a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH still below the dam.

In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 mile west of Melrose on September 4 MH, CR and BN
reported a BALTIMORE ORIOLE, a probable RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and a
singing EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE with three RED-EYED VIREOS, the GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, and a LEAST FLYCATCHER. Later in the day WW, JP, and JO reported the
crested flycatcher, one vireo, the eastern pewee, and the immature male Baltimore
Oriole. SSA and MLA had a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER on September 3 with a
NASHVILLE WARBLER and the oriole on September 4. BW and JNM on September 7 were
lucky as they found the pewee, crested flycatcher, immature male oriole, least
flycatcher, black-and-white warbler, three immature PAINTED BUNTINGS, several
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, and kettling SWAINSON'S HAWKS in the area. JO reported
the eastern pewee was still present September 9.
BW and JNM on September 7 at Elida had two immature MISSISSIPPI KITES and
a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER.
Two miles south of Dora at a playa BN and CR on September 4 reported ten
species of shorebirds, with a SEMIPALMATED, STILT, and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.

In Curry County:
JNM and BW on September 7 just north of Melrose and just west of NM 209
had a CACTUS WREN.

In Socorro County:
JO at his home at Luis Lopez south of Socorro on September 3 had an
INDIGO BUNTING. There was an EASTERN KINGBIRD by the railroad tracks a half mile
east of Luis Lopez. There were two NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES at his home on
September 4.
On Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on September 5 JS found a
CATBIRD where the Seasonal Road's eastbound leg turns north.
CR and BN on September 5 saw an OSPREY a mile east of Bingham.

In Chaves County:
CL again had the ROSEATE SPOONBILL at Bitter Lake Refuge on September 3.
BW and JNM saw it on Unit 15 on September 7, the only part with water. They
had 'lots' of STILT SANDPIPERS with two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS on Unit 7.

In Sierra County:
At Elephant Butte Lake JO on September 7 reported a LAUGHING GULL at
Three Sisters Point and another at the east end of North Monticello Point. At the
northwest corner of the latter point he had a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
At Percha State Park BW on September 5 found a CASSIN'S VIREO, an
immature female AMERICAN REDSTART, and two CAVE SWALLOWS. CL the same day had three
redstarts and lots of warblers. JO reported on September 7 that he and CBl
had a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, NORTHERN PARULA, AMERICAN REDSTART, and PAINTED
REDSTART. CBl on September 8 had a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER there. On
September 9 CBl again saw the Black-throated Green with a WHIPPOORWILL, CASSIN'S
VIREO, and female Parula.

In Catron County:
JH at her home east of Datil on September 5 saw a NASHVILLE WARBLER in
her yard, and on September 6 a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.

In Grant County:
DJ at the Gila Hot Springs in the Pinos Altos Mts. had a male DOWNY
WOODPECKER and NASHVILLE WARBLER on September 4.

In Luna County:
CL on September 5 at Pancho Villa Park near Columbus saw a BELL'S VIREO
and BELTED KINGFISHER.
At Katfish Kove near the City of Rocks park on September 5 CL had a
KASSIN'S (o.k. Cassin's) VIREO.

In Doņa Ana County:
DG had at least one female DICKCISSEL in his yard north of Las Cruces on
September 3.

In Otero County:
BN and CR on September 5 had CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS in fields near the
Indigo Lizard shop at the Three Rivers turnoff.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. CL had the
PEREGRINE and a MARBLED GODWIT on September 3.

In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs on September 5 CR and BN found a RED-EYED VIREO,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and DICKCISSELS.
And they had one UPLAND SANDPIPER in the hay fields near Loving.

In Lea County:
BN and CR on September 5 had an amazing 137 SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS in
a flock at mile marker 150 ten to 12 miles east of Maljamar !
CL at the sewage ponds in Tatum on September 2 had an AMERICAN REDSTART.
BN and CR on September 4 at the ponds saw two EASTERN KINGBIRDS.
PM had a BELTED KINGFISHER at the pond in his Eunice yard on August 31.
