This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for
Thursday December 7, 2006 with reports of EARED GREBE, MANX
SHEARWATER, NORTHERN FULMAR, WESTERN KINGBIRD, seasonal and local
reports of interest, and announcements.
.
At least one EARED GREBE continued this week on Dec 3 at Lakes Bay
near Atlantic City. From the intersection of Rtes 9 & 40/322 go east
on 40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short
distance on Cordova to the bay: look for the birds here or opposite
adjacent blocks (DeLorme P. 71, G-16).
.
A PACIFIC LOON was reported at Holgate Dec 2.
.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was found along Great Bay Blvd near Tuckerton Dec 2.
.
Barnegat Light State Park hosted 65-75 COMMON EIDERS, 20+ HARLEQUIN
DUCKS, GREAT CORMORANTS, PURPLE SANDPIPER, and HORNED LARKS Dec 2.
.
A pelagic trip out of Belmar traveling 60 miles offshore recorded 3
NORTHERN FULMARS, 7 MANX SHEARWATERS, 4 RED PHALAROPES, LITTLE GULL,
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 14 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, and 5 large
alcid sp. Dec 3.
.
A male EURASIAN WIGEON was discovered Dec 4 in Rumson, precisely
where a drake was found last year. From the intersection of Rumson
Rd/Rte 520 and Navesink Ave, go north on Navesink Ave to a stop
sign. Go straight, crossing Hartshorne Rd and make a quick right to
a small gravel parking lot. Look for the bird in the pond there.
.
At least one RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was viewed this week in Rahway
River Park off Saint Georges Ave in the grove of oak trees near the
restrooms and playground Dec 3.
.
The NORTHERN SHRIKE continued this week at the Great Swamp NWR, noted
on Dec 4. Look for the bird at the end of Pleasant Plains Rd between
the heron rookery parking lot and the closed bridge—late afternoon
may be best. The bird has been seen a few times around the drainage
ditch; patience may be required to see this bird.
.
Raccoon Ridge tallied 15 BALD EAGLES, 4 GOLDEN EAGLES, and 2-4 RAVENS
Dec 2.
.
In Sussex County a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK highlighted birds at Wallkill
River NWR Dec 3. Two GOLDEN EAGLES were sighted over Culvers Gap Dec 2.
.
