This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for December 8, 2006,

In Rio Arriba County:
SL had a TUNDRA SWAN a mile at a pond on US 95 on the way to Heron Lake SP
on November 30.

In San Miguel County:
JP and WW on December 2 had four TUNDRA SWANS on McAllister Lake near Las
Vegas (one immature) and CACKLING GEESE.
BW advises that the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is now closed to
birding.

In Colfax County:
DC on December 8 at the Maxwell Refuge saw the NORTHERN SHRIKE again near
Lake 13. DC saw on Lake 13 a female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. The scoter was in
the middle of the lake on December 6 and seen close to the dam at the first
trash barrel on December 8 with a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE. The TUNDRA SWANS
were on Lake 13 on December 4. A late report from JS was of an immature
HARRIS'S SPARROW on the refuge November 23. DC had a COMMON LOON and two
LONG-TAILED DUCKS on Lake 13 on December 7.
DC had a high count of 18 HOODED MERGANSERS on Stubblefield Lake on December
7. Near Stubblefield JP and WW on December 2 saw a columbarius MERLIN,
with an adult male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on the lake. DC on the lake on December 8
saw a Common Loon, the three swans, the male Barrow's Goldeneye, the two
female Long-tailed Ducks, and four flyover LAPLAND LONGSPURS. He had 13 of the
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in the fields at the junction of A2 and A4.
At the owl roost at the west side of Laguna Madre north of Stubblefield
there was on December 2 five LONG-EARED OWLS.
At Springer Lake DC on December 2 saw a male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
On I-25 at mile marker 424 two miles south of Maxwell he saw two GOLDEN
EAGLES and a FERRUGINOUS HAWK on November 20. One or both of the eagles were
present November 27 and December 2, and seen on December 5 by PS.
At Sugarite State Park near Raton on November 22 DC had two ACORN
WOODPECKERS at Lake Alice. He did not find the woodpeckers on December 6.
At Yankee at the Yankee Canyon Road turnoff on December 6 DC saw a NORTHERN
SHRIKE.
On Eagle Nest Lake on November 21 DC saw eight CALIFORNIA GULLS, and three
immature BALD EAGLES. At the Cimarron Canyon SP east of town there was a
DIPPER and a WINTER WREN. On December 1 DC had three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Eagle
Nest. He counted ten COLLARED DOVES near the library with a female WOOD
DUCK near the river bridge close to the St. James Hotel.

In Cibola County:
CR and SD on November 25 at Bluewater Lake 131 PINYON JAYS at the lake and
two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in Bluewater Canyon above Bluewater Village. The
west side of the lake is closed for the winter, so the Prewitt (east)
entrance is to be taken off I-40.

In Bernalillo County:
JJ on December 3 at Sandia Crest found two CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS with a female
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the east side of the Kiwanis Meadow.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque JP on November 19 saw a high
count of 480 CACKLING GEESE with four SNOW GEESE.
HS at Rinconada Canyon at the Petroglyph NM saw an Arctic PEREGINE FALCON
on November 24.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque the SNC team on November 26
banded 26 BLACK ROSY-FINCHES. The flock numbered about 90, all Blacks. CR snd
BN on December 2 had the Hepburn's subspecies present. JP on November 22
had a female RED CROSSBILL at Sandia Park on the way up.
DP saw a BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW at the Three Gun Springs Trailhead at the
south end of the Sandias on December 4 with two RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS.

In DeBaca County:
RC found a COMMON LOON and a first year HERRING GULL on Sumner Lake on
November 23.

In Chaves County:
JH had a TUNDRA SWAN on Bitter Lake Refuge on Unit 5 on December 1. On
November 21 there was an EASTERN PHOEBE at the headquarters. An immature BALD
EAGLE was present on November 25 and 29.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on November 17-18 CB reported
four WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and several EASTERN BLUEBIRDS. CL and DP on November
19 had the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the feeders, a SWAMP SPARROW, and a
HARLAN'S HAWK. DB saw four of the geese, 16 WESTERN GREBES and nine CLARK'S
GREBES on November 23. On November 25 JP saw the EASTERN PHOEBE and two of the
White-throated Sparrows.

In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park JP and BP saw the DIPPER on November 24 on the
river just south of the fence. Also seen were two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and
many CEDAR WAXWINGS. SB on November 16 found a HARLAN'S HAWK in the fields
south of the park. CL had the Harlan's Hawk in the area on November 19. He had
a PLUMBEOUS VIREO and a white-throated sparrow present on December 4. South
of the park there were two VERMILION FLYCATCHERS with a female COMMON
GOLDENEYE at the Rio Grande bridge.
At the Oxbow lake in Truth or Consequences on December 4 CL had 300
mergansers of all three species.
JP reported two BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS in the park below Caballo Dam on
November 25 with many EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and five WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
At Seco Flats at Caballo Lake on December 3 DH saw an adult LITTLE BLUE
HERON, CACKLING GEESE, a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, five BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and a
HORNED GREBE.
JP saw two INCA DOVES in Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam. At
the lake's Rock Canyon Marine on December 4 CL found four HERRING GULLS.

In Grant County:
PINYON JAYS have appeared in numbers in the Silver City area in early
November.

In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.

In Luna County:
JP and BP on November 24 had a richardsoni MERLIN at Pancho Villa SP near
Columbus.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.

In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond on
December 5. It stays on the water on the lake's east side with a HERRING
GULL. Photos have been taken by JO. It was seen December 7 by JO, JZ, MS, JP,
DB, and WW. John advises that one needs to get permission to look for it
from the casino there. The office is near the Jack Pot Grill. There is a
platform from which it can be scoped. CL and CCBr saw bot the Iceland and the
Herring on December 8.
JN on November 30 found water still in Isaack's Lake with many ducks and
sparrows present, as well as a WHITE-TAILED KITE. JO found two kites present on
December 7; CL and CBr had the two kites a half mile north of the lake on
December 8.. JO says go to the stone gates and turn right south of the gates.
JZ and MS have had a female RUDDY GROUND-DOVE at their home near Radium
Springs for several weeks, seen well November 18 and 24, but appears irregularly.
They also have had two immature males and a female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS.
At his home in Mesilla on November 28 JN had a SWAMP SPARROW with the male
VERMILION FLYCATCHER still present.
DG had an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD at his home in northeast Las Cruces at least
through November 25.
There has been an invasion of CROWS in the Rio Grande area near Las Cruces.
JD reported up to 5000 on the east side of the Rio opposite the Mesilla
Valley Park. CL had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Mesilla Park on December 2. He
had an EASTERN PHOEBE and two to three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS of both forms
at the NMSU Plant Science Research Center. At a mile north of Mesilla Dam
there were two SWAMP SPARROWS along the ditch. CL on December 8 had a high
count of 47 WOOD DUCKS north of the dam.
BG had a immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD staying at his Las Cruces feeder
through December 3.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings. BB on November 22 at the lakes saw a DUNLIN.
SW reported the Dunlin on November 25. CL and CBr had it on November 29, JO
on December 8.

In Lea County:
PMc had an immature male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD at his feeder near Eunice on
November 26. It was still there though December 3.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. December 14 to Bosque del Apache with Sylvia Fee, and on December 21 to
the Rio Grande Nature Center with Madge Wallen. No trip is planned for
December 28.
