This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.

The PAINTED REDSTART, found on the UCSB campus more than 2 weeks ago, was
still present as late as Tuesday. Park in the Mesa parking structure and
walk south, past Campbell Hall. Look near the Coral Tree Cafe (in the coral
trees), or further on, in the open area where the eternal flame is. It was
flycatching near the flame again on Tuesday. A SUMMER TANAGER is also
nearby, and was seen yesterday afternoon. The LUCY'S WARBLER was also still
present on campus last weekend, in the bottlebrush trees inside the
courtyard at the Counseling and Career Center.

A CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR continues to be fairly easy to find in Elings
Park in Santa Barbara. Park at the end of Calle Montilla and walk up the
hill to the plateau near where the paragliders launch. It has been seen by
the path next to the wooden bike ramp, but it is a skulker, so look
carefully. The bird was present this morning.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK has returned for its 14th winter. The bird was first
found at the top of North Fairview Avenue at Cuesta Verde in Goleta. It was
seen on Saturday, the 2nd, soaring near the intersection of Fairview and
Cathedral Oaks Road.

An adult male ORCHARD ORIOLE has been found in the eucalyptus trees near the
Biltmore Hotel tennis courts in Montecito. Look north of the railroad tracks
as seen from the sidewalk on Hill Road. That bird was seen yesterday.

A LUCY'S WARBLER was found on Tecolotito Creek on Saturday the 2nd, between
70 and 90 Castillian Way.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was found on the 3rd at the confluence of Maria
Ygnacio and Atascadero Creeks.

At the Goleta Sewage Plant, a EURASIAN WIGEON and a BLUE-WINGED TEAL were
seen on the 2nd.

There are up to 200 BLACK SKIMMERS wintering on East Beach.

At Carpinteria Creek, a PLUMBEOUS VIREO was present just upcreek from the
8th Street bridge on Sunday the 3rd. On the 2nd, two MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES
were between 8th Street and Carpinteria Avenue, and on the 1st a WINTER WREN
was also present.

Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included 15 WHITE
PELICANS, 50 CANADA GEESE, 33 WOOD DUCKS, and 2 COMMON GOLDENEYE.

In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, the continuing GRACE'S
WARBLER was refound on the 2nd, in the pines south of Area 3 near the
gazebo. Both the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front
pond.

The EASTERN PHOEBE was still in River Oaks Park in Santa Maria on the 1st.
Look for it where the split-rail fence meets the chain link fence at the
foot path along the west edge of the park.

In blackberry bushes in the southeast corner of Old La Purisima Mission
Park, off south G Street in Lompoc, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued this
morning.

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
