Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for December 8,
2006. This report covers the period from December 1st, to December 8th,
and will be updated again on December 14th.

There were very few bird reports this week, and no rare sightings.

NORTHERN GANNETS continue to appear in good numbers along the coast. A
count of Gannets from Westerly to Jamestown on the 3rd, produced 1,000
individuals.

The AMERICAN BITTERN at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem was seen on the 1st and
the 4th.

In Jamestown, on the 3rd, at Marsh Meadows, 1 GREAT EGRET was reported, and
a GREAT EGRET was reported on the 4th at Sheffield Cove. Off Beavertail
Point State Park, 5 HARLEQUIN DUCK were observed on the 3rd.

A BALTIMORE ORIOLE and a HERMIT THRUSH were found at Fort Ninigret in
Charlestown on the 8th.

Also on the 8th, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was observed across the street
from the South Kingstown Police Station.

On the 5th, at Shelter Harbor Fire District Beach and adjacent parking lot
in Weekapaug, 2 HORNED GREBE and 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were reported on the
5th.

In Misquamicut, a flock of about 34 HORNED LARK continue in the grassy area
at the state beach.

At Brushneck Cove, seen from Seaview Drive in Warwick on the 4th, 11
BONPARTE'S GULL.

A WOOD DUCK was reported from the Seekonk River on the 8th.

A flock of WILD TURKEYS and an EASTERN PHOEBE were reported from Shannock
Hill Road in Carolina on the 3rd.

The dates for Christmas Bird Counts are: December 16, Newport/Westport,
December 17, Napatree Point/Westerly, December 23, South County.
