The WESTERN GREBE at Lake Walter F. George, first reported on 12/6, was
observed for most of the day on Saturday. For much of the time, the bird was
pretty far out on the lake and you will definitely need a scope. The best
viewing opportunities are from the dam, located just north of Ft. Gaines,
GA, either from the Georgia side (access off of GA 39; you can drive to
almost the middle of the dam where you can set up your scope and scan; GA
side affords better viewing conditions in the morning) or from the Alabama
side (go into Ft. Gaines, turn west on GA 37, go across the bridge, take the
first right (north) and head to the top of the dam; AL side offers better
viewing conditions in the afternoon). The bird wanders widely between GA
and AL waters. [DeLorme: p. 48, grid G-1; Birding Georgia: p. 131]

At the Eufaula NWR-Bradley Unit, a birder called in to report very good
looks at a KING RAIL and a VIRGINIA RAIL on Saturday. [DeLorme: p. 48, grid
B-1; Birding Georgia: p. 131]

The adult male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD in Decatur, GA, which has been present
at the residence of Pat White, was not seen on Saturday. To try for the
bird, go to 2210 Fairoaks Rd.: From I-85 & Clairmont Rd., head south on
Clairmont, turn left on Audubon Dr., turn right on Ravenwood Dr., bear left
on to Alderbrook Rd., bear left on to Timberland Dr. and take a left on
Fairoaks Rd. The bird has been frequenting the front feeders lately, but
there are feeders in the back that the bird frequented earlier in the fall.
Proceed up the driveway to the right side of the house and go through the
gate to the backyard.
