This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was discovered along the levee that goes west from
I Street towards Jane Creek. The bird was found in the last stand of Coyote
Brush after the last red "No Hunting" sign (Scott Carey). Searches for this
bird after its initial finding have been unsuccesful.

A HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK was seen near the intersection of the Bayside
Cutoff and Highway 101 (Scott Carey).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the LITTLE BLUE HERON re-appeared at the Alexander Dairy
where it was originally found this past April. Also present in the area was
a male EURASIAN WIDGEON, 2 CATTLE EGRETS, and 4 FERRUGINOUS HAWKS (Alan
Barron).

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued in a flock that also contained 4
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS southwest of the Eureka
Marsh (Tom Leskiw).

21 Nov.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen southwest of the Eureka Marsh in the first
willow patch to the north end of the Bayshore Mall parking lot. The
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARLBER continued just southeast of the gate in the parking
lot (Tom Leskiw).

22 Nov.

The HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK continued at its usual spot at the intersection
of Bayside Cuttoff and Highway 101 (Steve Bailey).

23 Nov.

A HARRIS'S SPARROW was found in the Arcata Bottoms along Mad River Road. The
bird was found in the blackberry brambles next to a barn just south of the
first bend at Mad River Road. The 2 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS continued at the
Allen Marsh along I Street. Two PALM WARBLERS were seen along the levee west
of I Street and Gearheart and Hauser marshes (Scott Carey).

A lot of sightings came from the Arcata Marsh Project today:

Two female HOODED MERGANSERS were seen at Klopp Lake in the afternoon (Frank
Anderson).

Two EURASIAN WIDGEON were on Gearheart Marsh. One LESSER YELLOWLEGS was
along the I Street levee west of Gearheart Marsh. Two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS
continued along the railroad tracks between Allen Marsh and the Log Pond.
One ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (orestra race) was north of the Log Pond. A flock
of 8 PALM WARBLERS were west of I Street along the railroad tracks and 1 was
seen along the I Street levee and another was along the railroad tracks
south of the interpretive center. Ten to 12 SWAMP SPARROWS were found: 2-3
were along the I Street levee in the saltmarsh, 3 were north of the Log Pond
in the slough, 2-3 were in the saltmarsh east of Allen Marsh, and 2 were in
the saltmarsh west of the Log Pond. A female type COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was
just north of the Allen Marsh and a male was at Hauser Marsh (Rob Fowler).

An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen flying from Hauser Marsh to Allen Marsh late in
the day (Scott Carey).

25 Nov. continued.....

A 25 minute seawatch from Table Bluff yielded the following species: 1 adult
PARASITIC JAEGER, 4,000 PACIFIC LOONS, 150 RED-THROATED LOONS, 5,000 SURF
SCOTERS, 0 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and 3 BONAPARTES GULLS. At the end of
Cannibal Island Road in the Loleta Bottoms were 1 CASPIAN TERN, 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, and 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR was in the cornfield. Also present in the
vicinity were a LONG-TAILED DUCK, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 20 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS. Three BURROWING OWLS were on the South Spit. One LONG-TAILED DUCK and
2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen from King Salmon (Matt Wachs).

A seawatch from Wedding Rock at Patricks Point State Park yielded the
following species: 4 MARBLED MURRELETS, 2 ANCIENT MURRELET, 20 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, and 1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE (Ed Debellevue).

26 Nov.

In the Arcata Bottoms a CATTLE EGRET was present at the farm just before the
first bend at Mad River Road. A high count of 850 MEW GULLS were tallied on
the Mad River at Tyee City. The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued along the
V-street Loop.
