Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday, December 11, at 11:40 am. To report a bird

A WESTERN MEADOWLARK was seen in the Irricana sloughs on Saturday,
December 9. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk at approx 3 pm as it
perched at the top of an aspen tree on a property on the east side of
RgeRd 253, 1.9 km south of TwpRd 264.

A HARLAN'S HAWK was seen along the Bow River in southeast Calgary on
Wednesday, Dec 6. The bird was seen by Brian Elder, Ray Woods and Bob
Storms. It was just off the first ramp south of Southland Dr off
Deerfoot Tr. The same day, they observed a GYRFALCON at Beaverdam Flats
in Calgary, then observed another GYRFALCON approx 15 km west of
Nanton. SHORT-EARED OWLS were still being reported in our area over
this weekend. Bill Wilson observed 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS from the parking
lot off the NW corner of Frank Lake, 6 km east of High River on Hwy 23,
on Sunday, Dec 10; while Terry Korolyk and Mike Sturk watched 2
SHORT-EARED OWLS in the SW corner of the RgeRd 253/TwpRd 260 junction
between Irricana and Strathmore on Saturday, Dec 9. Mike Sturk observed
a SNOWY OWL on TwpRd 273, just east of RgeRd 260, east of Irricana on
Dec 9, while Tim and Pan McNeill saw 2 SNOWY OWLS along the N/S road on
the east flank of Frank Lake on Dec 10.

Recent waterfowl reports included a WESTERN GREBE on Lake Minnewanka in
Banff NP, seen Thurday, Dec 7, by Jason Rogers . Jason also saw 2
female LONG-TAILED DUCKS there. Brian Elder, Ray Woods and Bob Storms
reported a GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a female RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER and a HARLEQUIN DUCK were on the Bow River in Beaverdam Flats
in Calgary on Wednesday, Dec 6. Malcolm McDonald reported 3 EARED
GREBES were in the NW corner of Prank Lake on Sunday, Dec 10.

Susan McPherson had a HARRIS'S SPARROW at her home near the Bar U Ranch,
west of the Hwy 540/Hwy 22 junction, from Nov 24 to the cold snap; while
Malcolm McDonald observed a HARRIS'S SPARROW in Nanton on Sunday,
December 10. For details on that bird, call Maldolm at 239-3817.

BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Bldg, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on Wednesday, January 3. The topic will be a review of
the Calgary & area Christmas Bird Counts. Doors open at 7:00 PM.

Sat Dec 16: If not on a Christmas Bird Count, you are encouraged to
cover your own Calgary CBC territory for Count-week birds. Birds seen
today, not tomorrow, are countable; or join Bernard Goulet, 279-0491;
Mike Mulligan, 232-1013; Ray Woods, 241-6007; call leaders to establish
times and meeting places.

Sun Dec 17: Calgary Christmas Bird Count. If you would like to
participate and have not already registered, call Phil Cram (228-4142)
or Donna & Arthur Wiekowski (276-7799). Dates and compilers of
surrounding area Christmas Bird Counts can be found on the CFNS website.

Sat Dec 23, 9am: Carburn Park. S from Glenmore Tr at 18 St SE to second
stoplight, then right & follow signs. Leader Bernard Goulet - 279-0491.

Sun Dec 24, 9 am: Birding Votier's Flats, Fish Creek Provincial Park
(FCPP). S end of Elbow Dr Sw. Leader Tony Timmons - 256-0754.

Tue Dec 26, 9 am: Bird Weaselhead Natural Area. Meet parking lot, 37 St
& 66 Ave SW. Leader Bruce Barnetson - 246-1329.

Sun Dec 31, 9 am: Advance scouting FCCP Bird Count. Shannon Terrace
area. Meet parking lot at W end of the Park, off 37 ST and 130 Ave SW.
