This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, November 24 at 11:30 a.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.

A PAINTED REDSTART was found on the UCSB campus on Wednesday, and was still
present yesterday. Note that there is no parking permit required to park on
campus today only. The bird was last seen in a eucalyptus tree close to the
west wall of Ellison Hall. It was first found in the row of eucalyptus trees
east of the Davidson Library. A SUMMER TANAGER is also nearby, and was seen
yesterday afternoon at the northeast corner of North Hall.

A CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR has been fairly easy to find in Elings Park in
Santa Barbara. Park at the end of Calle Montilla and walk up the hill to the
plateau near where the paragliders launch. It has been seen with a flock of
meadowlarks by the path next to the bike ramp, and was still present on
Wednesday.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK has returned for its 14th winter. The bird was first
found at the top of North Fairview Avenue at Cuesta Verde in Goleta. It was
seen on Sunday the 19th, soaring over Calle Real, just east of Fairview.

A EURASIAN WIGEON is at the Goleta Sewage Plant.

At the Bird Refuge on Wednesday was a TROPICAL KINGBIRD and 6 WOOD DUCKS.

There are up to 200 BLACK SKIMMERS wintering on East Beach.

At Carpinteria Creek, a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was reported yesterday, in the
willows below 6th Street.

Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included two adult and
one immature BALD EAGLE, 18 CANADA GEESE, 60 WOOD DUCKS, and two PEREGRINE
FALCONS.

In the North County, Waller Park in Santa Maria had a continuing GRACE'S
WARBLER on Saturday the 18th. The bird was in the pines east of the
basketball court near area 3. Both the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE
remain in the front pond.

At the intersection of Happy Canyon Road and Alisos Avenue, a SAGE THRASHER
was present on Saturday the 18th.

Two CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were present on Saturday the 18th on the
north side of Armour Ranch Road about a quarter mile east of its
intersection with Highways 154 and 246.

A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER was found at the Santa Ynez Mission on October 27.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was seen in River Oaks Park in Santa Maria on Sunday the
19th. Look for it where the split-rail fence meets the chain link fence at
the foot path along the west edge of the park.

In blackberry bushes in the southeast corner of Old La Purisima Mission
Park, off south G Street in Lompoc, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued on
Tuesday morning.

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
