ORANGE COUNTY CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS THIS WEEKEND. Saturday is the south
coast count, and Sunday the northeastern (inland) count. It's not too late
to join in.... see:

the storm will hold off on Saturday, and be over by Sunday morning......

Observers: Peyton Cook, Trude Hurd, Doug Willick, Jim Pike, Jim Roe, Dick
Purvis, Kaaren Perry, John Afdem, Lou Murray, Joel Weintraub, Maxine Dougan.

Environmental Nature Center, Newport Beach. Continuing AMERICAN REDSTART,
also BROWN CREEPER in Redwood Forest area, and probably a chirping YELLOW
WARBLER in a nearby backyard (all from last Saturday).

End of Black Star Canyon: Sunday, one of the LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS still
around at the gate/telephone pole at the end of the road.

Peters Canyon Reservoir: HOODED MERGANSERS scopable...far side close to dam,
and a HORNED GREBE...... Also a ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW among the Tree Swallow
flock.

Misc: WESTERN TANAGERS on Saturday in a private residential area of Lemon
Heights. NASHVILLE WARBLER today near tennis courts of apartment complex,
west side of San Juan Creek between Stonehill and PCH in Dana Point.
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK still visiting feeder on private residence in Laguna
Beach last seen on 12/10. WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH today at Santa Ana
Cemetery.

Irvine Park: BROWN CREEPER in large trees near lower boat pond, below
waterfall...western side of little pond, large trees (Saturday)

Huntington Central Park: BLACK & WHITE WARBLER continues... in the
myoporum, southeast of the Slater Street parking lot, just before the
mini-culvert with railroad ties on either side of the sidewalk. Check both
sides of the sidewalk.

Bolsa Chica Preserve: Tuesday a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE foraging along Winterburg
Channel. Also REDDISH EGRET reported by a number of birders. AMERICAN
BITTERN near footbridge on Thursday. REDHEAD DUCKS in Outer Bolsa Bay from
overlook at Warner/PCH parking lot and 2 REDDISH EGRETS seen that day
(Thursday).

Caspers Wilderness Park: Today, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE (returns after a few years
absence) sitting on the sign just inside the gate entry on the right,
sign:" Speed Limit 10 mph." It flew across the meadow.

Santa Ana River: Possible SOLITARY SANDPIPERS (2) just north of Lincoln Ave.
This would be a very unusual occurence, and more information is desired. At
the river mouth on the 11th, HORNED GREBE and two COMMON GOLDENEYES

Doheny State Beach: A first cycle (winter) "KUMLIEN'S GULL" was at the
mouth of San Juan Creek. There are about 3/4 dozen dead or dying gulls
here, and fishing line/hooks,etc. doesn't appear to be the problem. Also a
HORNED GREBE (Tuesday).
