Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
December 12, a report was sent in from Lake Gregory. Birds sighted
included a WESTERN GREBE, and possibly a COMMON LOON. The loon needs
confirmation.
Steve Druce also sent in a report from the Crestline area on Dec. 12. He
saw a BALD EAGLE over Lake Gregory on the south side of the lake.
Pamela Kling posted a report on Dec. 11 from the Upland area. At Upland
Colonies Lake, off 19th and Campus Dr., she saw a WILSON’S SNIPE and a
LEAST SANDPIPER. At the Cable Airport Greenbelt at 15th and Benson, she
saw a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
John Green spotted a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in his yard. The bird was seen
more three times, although it was not consistently seen in a particular
place. John noted that, when the bird was seen, it perched motionless for
a 10 to 15 minute spell. Contact John via email for current information

Dan Williams checked the Temecula Duck Pond on Dec. 7 and found an
AMERICAN-EURASIAN WIGEON hybrid.
Howard King posted a report from the San Jacinto Wildlife Area on Dec. 10.
He found a ZONE-TAILED HAWK at the south end of pond 4 and heading towards
the duck clubs. He also saw the EASTERN PHOEBE at Pond B. At Lake Perris
he saw a sub-adult BALD EAGLE.
Roger Higson sent in a report on Dec. 13 of a PEREGRINE FALCON in the
Blythe area. He believes the falcon may be a Peales type Peregrine.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Tom Benson and Doug Karalun birded the Salton Sea area on Dec. 10.
Highlights included: the continuing ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Diehl Rd. between
Drew and Derrick, 2 HOODED MERGANSER on Fig Lagoon, a FERRUGINOUS HAWK, on
Drew Rd. just south of the Rio Bend RV Club, and the continuing SOLITARY
SANDPIPER at Kuhn’s Dairy. They also saw a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at the
north end of Lak Rd., and a first winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL and a near-
adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the northeast side of Obsidian Butte.

classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.

Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
December 12, a report was sent in from Lake Gregory. Birds sighted
