In Sandoval County:
BH and GP on December 10 at Cochiti Lake had a HORNED GREBE, two adult BALD
EAGLES, two RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and two WOOD DUCKS near the spillway.
The same day DB saw an immature HERRING GULL at the spillway and a
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE.
In Mora County:
DB on December 9 had a NORTHERN SHRIKE at the I-25 rest stop south of Wagon
Mound with a MYRTLE WARBLER. MOCKINGBIRD, and CURVE-BILLED THRASHER.
In San Miguel County:
JP. LL, and WW on December 9 had on Crane Lake of the Las Vegas Refuge many
CACKLING GEESE. DB reported a HARLAN'S HAWK at McAllister Lake on December 9.
The Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is now closed to birding.
In Colfax County:
DC on December 8 at the Maxwell Refuge saw the adult NORTHERN SHRIKE again
near Lake 13. It was seen by DB, JP, LL, and WW on December 9. DC has seen
on Lake 13 a female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER present for about two weeks. It was
seen by DB, JP, WW, and LL on December 9. On December 12 DC reports that the
ice has mostly melted on the lake and the scoter was far out in the middle of
the lake. DC had a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on December 8 there, with a
COMMON LOON and two LONG-TAILED DUCKS on December 7. He saw one of the .ducks
on December 10, with two adults and six immature BALD EAGLES.
DC had a high count of 18 HOODED MERGANSERS on Stubblefield Lake on December
7. DB on December 9 saw the adult male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE there. DC on the
lake on December 8 saw a COMMON LOON, the three TUNDRA SWANS, the male
Barrow's Goldeneye, and the two female Long-tailed Ducks.
DC had 13 of the WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in the fields at the junction of A2 and
A4. JP, WW, and LL saw them south of Lake 14 on December 10.
On I-25 at mile marker 424 two miles south of Maxwell DC saw two GOLDEN
EAGLES since November 20. Both of the eagles were seen on December 5 by PS.
At Yankee at the Yankee Canyon Road turnoff on December 6 DC saw a NORTHERN
SHRIKE.
DB found Springer Lake frozen on December 9 with some LAPLAND LONGSPURS
flying over.
In Quay County:
DC on December 9 found the four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS still present at a woodlot
near headquarters of Ute Lake SP with two BLUE JAYS. On the lake there was a
COMMON LOON, three HORNED GREBES, four WHITE PELICANS, and nine GREATER
SCAUP.
In Bernalillo County:
JJ on December 3 at Sandia Crest found two CLARK'S NUTCRACKERS with a female
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the east side of the Kiwanis Meadow.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque JP found a high count of 480
CACKLING GEESE. JJ on December 9 saw seven ROSS'S GEESE and ten SNOW GEESE.
DP had a SLATE-COLORED FOX SPARROW at the entrance feeder on December 9.
At the Sandia Crest House east of Albuquerque there is a good number of
BLACK ROSY-FINCHES with a few BROWN-CAPPED and GRAY-CROWNED. CR snd BN on
December 2 had the Hepburn's subspecies present, seen by several on December 3. On
December 10 SNC reported they only had Blacks, banded 41 (now 137 this
season) with five repeats from 2005 and last winter.
DP saw a BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW at the Three Gun Springs Trailhead at the
south end of the Sandias on December 4.
In Chaves County:
JH had a TUNDRA SWAN on Bitter Lake Refuge on Unit 5 on December 1. He had
on December 11 at the refuge an AMERICAN BITTERN on Unit 7 and a
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE ON Unit 16 with COMMON GOLDENEYES females present for a week.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on November 25 JP saw the
EASTERN PHOEBE and two of the WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.
At his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro JO reported two WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS and an immature HARRIS'S SPARROWS. He had a brief visit from a
PINTAIL on his pond.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park CL on December 9 saw the DIPPER, WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER with many CEDAR WASWINGS still present.
South of the park he found an OSPREY and a MERLIN.
In Riverside Park below Caballo Dam JP, LL, and WW on December 8 found two
HOUSE WRENS and another White-throated Sparrow. On the lake CL had a single
BONAPARTE'S GULL on December 9.
At the Oxbow lake in Truth or Consequences on December 8 JP and crew had one
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER with many COMMONS and a GREAT EGRET. CL had a HOODED
MERGANSER and an OSPREY December 9.
CL saw the two INCA DOVES in Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam on
December 9.. At the lake's Rock Canyon Marine CL found four HERRING GULLS.
DB had a CALIFORNIA GULL there on December 8.
In Grant County:
PINYON JAYS have appeared in numbers in the Silver City area.
In Hidalgo County:
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.
In Doņa Ana County:
JPa found a first winter ICELAND GULL on the Sunland Park racetrack pond on
December 5. It stays on the water on the lake's east side with a HERRING
GULL. Photos have been taken by JO. It was seen December 7 by JO, JZ, MS, JP,
DB, and WW. John advises that one needs to get permission to look for it
from the casino there. The office is near the Jack Pot Grill. There is a
platform from which it can be scoped. CL and CCBr saw the Iceland and the Herring
on December 8. It was also seen by MSt and others. On December 9 it was
found by SNC, SW, LS, WSH, TL and others. MT and MD saw the gull across from
the casino on December 12.
At a mearby bridge over the Rio Grande on December 7 JP, WW, and JO saw
eight to 15 BLACk-NECKED STILTS and eight SNOWY EGRETS with a GREAT EGRET.
JN on November 30 found water still in Isaack's Lake with many ducks and
sparrows present, as well as a WHITE-TAILED KITE. JO found two kites present on
December 7; CL and CBr had the two kites a half mile north of the lake on
December 8. CCBr saw them again on December 8 and 9; JP and WW on December 8 a
mile north of the lake.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs have had two immature males
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS. The two males were still seen on December 9 with eight
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and a male RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER.
At his home in Mesilla JN found on December 11 the male VERMILION FLYCATCHER
survived the cold and is still there with an EASTERN PHOEBE.
CL on December 9 had an OSPREY in Hatch.
There has been an invasion of CROWS in the Rio Grande area near Las Cruces.
CL had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Mesilla Park on December 2. He had an
EASTERN PHOEBE and two to three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS of both forms at the
NMSU Plant Science Research Center. At a mile north of Mesilla Dam there were
two SWAMP SPARROWS along the ditch. CL on December 8 had a high count of 47
WOOD DUCKS north of the dam.
MB again saw the AMERICAN BITTERN at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park on
December 9 by the pond with a SWAMP SPARROW.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings. BB on November 22 at the lakes saw a DUNLIN.
CL and CBr had it on November 29, JO on December 8.
In Eddy County:
SW reported a WHITE-TAILED KITE on December 9 at the Seven Rivers Waterfowl
Area north of Brantley Lake.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On December 21 they go to the Rio Grande Nature Center with Madge
Wallen. No trip is planned for December 28.
