Date: Thursday, December 14, 2006 compiled at:
5:45pm.
To report: (207) 846-8002, or

Coverage: York, Cumberland, and Sagadahoc
Counties.
This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the
Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the
Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One,
Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A
Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are
referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of
current and past reports can be found at
www.yarmouthbirds.com.
Weather Summary: A strong cold front Thurs. night,
which produced some light rain, was followed by a low
pressure system that surprised us with our first
significant snowfall of the season (high of 7.3” in
Hollis, less along the coast). Very cold arctic air
followed on strong NW winds, but temps. again
moderated by Sun. with a zonal, westerly flow
redeveloping, and high temps about 10 degrees above
normal returned (normal in Portland is 37/19F). A weak
cold front passed on Mon, toughing off light rain
showers. Heavier rain developed ahead of another front
on Wed., but temps soared to a record high of 55F (in
Portland) on light SW winds on Thursday.
The **ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER** continues at the Saco
Yacht Club area through at least through the morning
of 12/12. The bird continues to be seen on the
scrubby hillside, in the riparian trees near the
public boat launch, and behind the yacht club itself.
From downtown Saco, turn onto Front Street, bear right
to proceed under the railroad tracks, and proceed to
the boat launch parking lot (Delorme Map 71: B-3).
Grondin Pond in Scarborough continues its tradition as
a late-season waterfowl hotspot. From Black Point Rd,
Grondin Pond is off of Clearwater Ave (Delorme Map 3,
B-4), but is surrounded by private property here.
However, the productive south end of the lake can be
viewed from the far end of the cemetery along Black
Point Rd, just west of Clearwater Ave. Or, take Fogg
Rd off of Black Point Rd to a left onto Woodview Rd,
which ends at a cul-de-sac on the pond’s north end.
This week, Grondin Pond hosted: a “BLUE” GOOSE since
12/9 – and joined by a “regular” SNOW GOOSE on 12/12;
one hen CANVASBACK on 12/8 through today; one late
GREEN-WINGED TEAL on 12/8; up to 10 LESSER and 2
GREATER SCAUP; 12 RUDDY DUCKS that arrived on 12/11;
and up to 10 AMERICAN COOTS.
Meanwhile, nearby Prout’s Pond (off of Pleasant Hill
Rd, behind “The Food Guy” restaurant; Delorme Map 3:
A-4) hosted two drake GADWALL on the 14th, two
AMERICAN WIGEON on the 10th through today, and 14
RUDDY DUCKS on the 10th. A drake AMERICAN WIGEON
and a hen NORTHERN PINTAIL were at Evergreen Cemetery
on the 12th, and a female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was
spotted off of Hermit Island in Phippsburg (Delorme
Map 6: E-4) on the same day.
A TURKEY VULTURE was over downtown Saco on the 9th.
An immature light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was over the
Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 9th,
while a dark-morph was spotted at Popham Beach State
Park on the 10th. A MERLIN has been frequenting
various locations in Portland’s East End, including
the Eastern Promenade this week.
A late KILLDEER was noted on Goose Rock Beach in
Kennebunkport (Delorme Map 3: D-3) on the 9th.
An odd ICELAND GULL (?) returned to Portland’s East
End Beach on 12/9 for its 6th consecutive winter.
This is a very large bird, with seemingly pure white
wingtips and a darkish eye.
Seawatching from Small Point in Phippsburg on the 10th
produced 40 RAZORBILLS and 60+ BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKES, while the next day another birder tallied
30 RAZORBILLS, one DOVEKIE, one THICK-BILLED MURRE,
and one very late PARASITIC JAEGER.
A male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was spotted along Sawyer
Road in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: A-4) on the
7th, one of the few reports received this fall.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted in Cape Elizabeth’s
Spurwink Marsh, at the corner of Spurwink Ave. and
Wells Rd. (Delorme Map 3: A-5) on 12/7.
A CAROLINA WREN continues at the Saco Yacht Club,
while singles showed up in Freeport and Brunswick
yards this week.
Up to 7 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS are visiting one Scarborough
feeding station, while another Scarborough yard is
hosting another 6 or so. One more was at the Saco
Yacht Club on the 9th.
A lingering male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER continued
at a Windham feeder through at least 12/9, 6
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were at Popham Beach State Park
on 12/13, while the YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT along
Portland’s Eastern Promenade continues (now being seen
near the hill down from the sewage treatment plant,
heading down towards East End Beach) through at least
12/12.
Three tardy SWAMP SPARROWS were found at Portland’s
Capisic Pond Park on 12/11.
One Scarborough feeder hosted a late female RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD on the 10th, a male on the 14th, and a
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD on the 9th.
An immature female BALTIMORE ORIOLE continues in and
around the parking lot for Biddeford Pool Beach,
through at least 12/9.
A different Scarborough feeder hosted a single COMMON
REDPOLL on 12/9.
