Sightings for December 15
The Lake Country CBC was held on December 14. Unofficial total is 85
species. Highlights included an imm. SNOW GOOSE at the N. end of Woods Lake
(CC,GW), 5 CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES in Ellison Park near Vernon (CS), a
DUSKY GROUSE, BOREAL CHICKADEES, a BARRED OWL and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
along Postill Lake Road (DB), an ad. MEW GULL on Duck Lake (TF), and a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Pixie Beach (RT, DW,JL).
Sightings for December 13
On December 13, a PRAIRIE FALCON was along the road to the Southern Plus
Feedlot, off Black Sage Road S. of Oliver. Also along this road a EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE was seen and a possible RINGED TURTLE DOVE was accompanying it
(LN). Up to 22 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES have been seen at the feedlot and at
a feeder on Road No. 9 (fide DB).
The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD continues at 12820 Wright Ave in Summerland. It was
seen on December 8 (EF), 9 (CC,RT) and 13 (DC).
On December 12 a YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen on Osoyoos Lake S. of Haynes
Point (DB).
N. of the bridge along Hwy 3 in Osoyoos were 2 PACIFIC LOONS on December 12
(DB).
In flooded fields at the N. end of Osoyoos Lake on December 12, a single
male EURASIAN WIGEON was in a large flock of AMERICAN WIGEON (DB).
Along the dyke S. of Road 22, two BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were seen coming in
to roost in the evening on December 12 (DB).
At Willow Beach at the N. end of Osoyoos Lake on December 12, a RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER was seen (DB).
On December 10 a SNOW BUNTING was seen at the University of British Columbia
Okanagan in Kelowna (RC). It was in the snow and gravel near the lower
parking lot.
There may be up to 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS in the Okanagan at the
moment. Two birds are being seen in Penticton along the beach on Okanagan
Lake in front of the big peach. The continuing adult was last seen on
December 11 (DB), and a 2nd winter bird found on December 8 (LN) was again
seen on the 9 (CC,RT). An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, present
occasionally in Vernon was last seen on December 11 (CS,GD).
At the Esplanade Trails in Penticton, 2 CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES were a
surprise on Dec 9. Also here were many WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, 2 RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS, 4 VARIED THRUSHES, a CASSIN'S FINCH and a COMMON REDPOLL
(CC,RT,DC).
At the SS Sicamous in Penticton there were 3 RUDDY DUCKS (CC,RT,DC).
A NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was seen at the McCulloch Nordic Cross Country Ski Area
along Hwy 33, E. of Kelowna on December 9 (JL).
On December 7, a first winter GLAUCOUS GULL was at the Maude Roxby Bird
Sanctuary in Kelowna (GW).
Sightings for December 6
On December 4, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was on the beach near the
big peach on Okanagan Lake in Penticton (LN). Also in the area, an EARED
GREBE was near the pier at the Lakeside Resort in Penticton (LN).
The NORTHERN MOCINGBIRD at 12820 Wright Ave in Summerland was again seen on
December 5 (LN).
