BirdBox, sponsored by the Golden Gate Audubon Society, compiled
24 November 2006 at 6 PM.
Highlights: EMPEROR GOOSE, YELLOW-BILLED LOON, ROCK SANDPIPER,
SWAMP SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW
Del Norte Co.

On Nov. 18 or 19 there were 2 ROCK SANDPIPERs at the end of Point St. George.
Also here were 9 HARLEQUIN DUCKs, 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK, 60 BLACK SCOTERs
and 35 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERs. (Rich Stallcup)
Humboldt Co.

At 4 PM on Nov. 23, a subadult HARRIS'S SPARROW was found along Mad River
Road in the Arcata Bottoms. Take the road north to a dogleg paralleling
the Mad River. Just south of there, the bird was with a large flock of
crowned sparrows, near a barn with blackberry brambles. (Scott Carey)
Also on Nov. 23, there were two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERs near the RR tracks
at the Arcata Marsh, and 4 PALM WARBLERs in the vicinity. (Scott Carey)
On Nov. 18 or Nov. 19, the Arcata Marsh had 4 SWAMP SPARROWs; other species
included EURASIAN WIGEON, RED KNOT, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE and PALM WARBLER.
Along the B Street loop were found 2 PEREGRINE FALCONs, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLs
and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. At Patrick Point State Park there were 4 GRAY JAYs
near the Visitors Center, and 30 RED CROSSBILLs flew over. (Rich Stallcup)
On Nov. 20, a SWAMP SPARROW was seen at the Salmon Creek Unit of the
Humboldt Bay NWR. (Rich Stallcup)
Humboldt or Del Norte County

On Nov. 18 or 19, a one-hour seawatch from Wedding Rock found these species:
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, POMARINE JAEGER, PARASITIC JAEGER, ANCIENT MURRELET,
MARBLED MURRELET, and RHINOCEROS AUKLET. At Freshwater Lagoon were one
BALD EAGLE, an OSPREY, a RED-NECKED GREBE, 16 HOODED MERGANSERs and
500 RING-NECKED DUCKs. (Rich Stallcup)
Mendocino Co.

On Nov. 24, two EMPEROR GEESE were at Big River. They were found on mudflats
about 1/4 mile east of the mouth at 11:15; at 1:15 they moved to Mendocino
Bay, and at 2:15 flew north. (Dorothy Tobkin)
San Mateo Co.

On the morning of Nov. 24, the YELLOW-BILLED LOON continued at Pescadero
Creek near (usually feeding west of) the highway-1 bridge. An OSPREY
was seen east of the bridge. (David McIntyre)
