Three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and a single BLACK SCOTER were seen from
Dockweiler State Beach on November 22. The birds can be observed from the
Hyperion Outlook parking area or from the beach near Lifeguard platform #58.
A COMMON GOLDENEYE was at Ballona Lagoon on November 23. The lagoon is near
the corner of Pacific and Voyage in Marina del Rey. Another was at Quail
Lake near Gorman on November 23.
A big surprise was the discovery of a ROCK SANDPIPER at the Ballona Creek
mouth in Playa del Rey on November 22 and still present on November 23.
Take the 90 Freeway west from the 405 Freeway and turn left on Culver.
Follow Culver to the end in Playa del Rey and bear right and onto Pacific.
Go to the end and park. Continue on foot in the same direction to the
jetties. The bird moves between the jetties associating with Surfirds and
Black Turnstones.
A juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Holy Cross Cemetery on November
17. The bird was between the south pond and the main buildings to the north
and uphill from the pond. The cemetery entrance is on Slauson east of the
405 Freeway.
The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD at Banning Park in Wilmington was seen again on
November 20. The bird was in the magnolias north of the mansion.
A VARIED THRUSH was at Ladera Park in Ladera Heights on November 21. It was
seen between the center of the park and north of here to the basketball
court.
A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on November 19. The
bird was observed in the field west of the main trail. A SNOW GOOSE was
also at Madrona Marsh near the sump.
A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Alondra Park on November 19. This bird was in a
ficus tree east of the lake and north of the bridge to the island.
A PINE WARBLER was at John Anson Ford Park in Bell Gardens on November 17.
The park is east of Garfield and north of Firestone. The bird was at the
fenced maintenance yard southwest of the pond at the center of the park.
PAINTED REDSTARTS continue at Monrovia Canyon near the Nature Center and at
Bonelli Park in San Dimas near Restroom #8.
This report is sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society.
