ACCIDENTAL
**SLATY-BACKED GULL** (potential 2nd state record)

Here is the Iowa Rare Bird Alert Update for Sunday, December 17th, 2006:

SOUTHWEST:
POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY: The winter adult SLATY-BACKED GULL was observed at
Lake Manawa throughout the day on the 17th. One observer commented that the
bird "has been very cooperative in allowing us to get good looks at all the
IDing marks, in flight, close by, in the water and standing on the ice."
The bird has primarily been located on the east side of the boat launch area
on the north side of the lake. When you enter the lake area from the north
you drive straight ahead (not to the right which goes around the west side
of the lake) onto the penninsula and parking lot near the boat launch. From
there look east. Good luck to those chasers!

If accepted, this would represent the 2nd state record and the first since
1989 (which was along the Mississippi River in Scott County).
