A PACIFIC LOON, first seen on Dec 12, continues on the Bow River in SE Calgary, and
was recorded on the Calgary Christmas Bird Count (CCBC) on Dec 17 when it was seen
at Beaverdam Flats near the Calf Robe Bridge. This is only the second record of this
species on the CCBC with the previous sighting on the 1993 count.

Other highlights of the CCBC to this am include a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in SE
Calgary, and 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the Bow River in the Carburn Park-Beaverdam
Flats area. Records were broken for WOOD DUCKS 22, (14), BUFFLEHEAD 273, (245),
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE 20, (18) and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK 8, (6). A SNOWY OWL was near the
Deerfoot Trail/Southland Drive junction and an unidentifed GULL was seen along the
river south of the Glenmore Trail Bridge.

The Banff-Canmore CBC held on Dec 16 recorded 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on open water off
the dam at Lake Minnewanka.

Greg Wagner reported 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in a mixed flock of HORNED LARKS and 6 SNOW
BUNTINGS seen earlier this week on the N/S road along the east flank of Frank Lake
which is east of High River on Hwy 23, 6 km east of Hwy2. On Dec 16 Greg observed 2
NORTHEN HARRIERS at Frank Lake.

Joan and Malcolm MacDonald reported the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, first seen Nov 29, is
still in Exshaw and was seen Dec 17 along the back lane to Barrier Mountain Drive.

Terry Korolyk observed flocks of HOUSE FINCHES totalling 60 birds in Lake Placid
Hill just west of Acadia Drive in SE Calgary on Dec 15.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Thursday, Dec 21.
