EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -

This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, December 18.

Many of the birding highlights from over the weekend came as a result
of
Christmas Bird Counts conducted in a number of locations on Saturday
and
Sunday. A sample of some of the highlights includes the following
reports.

The Athol CBC tallied a record 67 species, including a WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER, 53 COMMON RAVENS, 6 WINTER WRENS, and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW. The Worcester count recorded 81 species, with notable
reports
being 2 REDHEADS, 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, a RED-THROATED
LOON, a GREAT EGRET, a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, and
58 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.

The Cape Ann CBC generated 112 species, including a PACIFIC LOON, an
EARED GREBE, a SNOWY EGRET, a KING EIDER, 216 HARLEQUIN
DUCKS, 2 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, 2 BLACK-HEADED GULLS, 2
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, a WESTERN
KINGBIRD still present on Saint Louis Avenue in Gloucester, 44
EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. The Greater Boston
count located 122 species, including a KING EIDER, 7 PEREGRINE
FALCONS, a CLAPPER RAIL, 4 SNOWY OWLS, a BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

South of Boston the Buzzards Bay CBC tallied a record high 125
species,
along with featuring 4 GREAT EGRETS, an OSPREY, a RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD still present in Cotuit and a BELL'S VIREO continuing in
Falmouth, an unidentified swallow, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, a LARK
SPARROW in Bourne, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. On the Cape Cod CBC
121 species were located, including a KING EIDER, 3 BARROW'S GOLDEN-
EYES, an AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 GREAT EGRETS and 3 WILLETS,
hundreds of RAZORBILLS, a SNOWY OWL, a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and an AMERICAN PIPIT.

Miscellaneous reports from the weekend included a EURASIAN WIGEON
at Russell Mill Pond in Plymouth; a GOLDEN EAGLE at South Quabbin;
reports of small numbers of DOVEKIES at both Cape Ann and Parker
River
Refuge on Plum Island; 9 REDHEADS, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, and a
THICK-BILLED MURRE in Provincetown; and a flock of 200 COMMON
GRACKLES in Medford.
