This is the Tuesday, December 19, 2006 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a statewide
service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding community of
Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports submitted by ASM
members and other birders throughout the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual, or accidental
on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004 and
2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section are
listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be considered rare
only during a particular season or in a particular part of the state.) The
Missouri checklist can be accessed at: http://mobirds.org/MBRC/MOChecklist.asp **

ST. LOUIS AREA

At least four RED CROSSBILLS were present at August A. Busch Memorial CA (St.
Charles Co.) since Saturday, December 16, with the last report being by Charlene
Malone on Monday, December 18. These birds have been observed feeding on the
cones of the pines around Lake 6.

On Saturday, December 16, two TUNDRA SWANS were observed flying in with several
TRUMPETER SWANS then landing in Teal Pond at Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) by
Mike Thelan and his SLAS field trip participants. Before the field trip began,
Len Hudgens counted 133 TRUMPETER SWANS in Heron Pond. Later in the morning the
group located a BLACK SCOTER, possibly one of the two Black Scoters last reported
on December 3. This bird was observed in Ellis Bay out from the observation
tower. Also in Ellis Bay, the group found at least one GREATER SCAUP and observed
210 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS. In addition to seeing the BLACK SCOTER in Ellis Bay
on Sunday, December 17, Dave Rogles found a female/imm. SURF SCOTER. The bird was
observed from the former pit toilet parking lot. Dave also observed 127 TRUMPETER
SWANS and two TUNDRA SWANS. Lastly, Dave observed a female MERLIN perched on the
top of a tree along the confluence road. This road leads from Riverlands Way to
the Edward
and Pat Jones – Confluence Point SP (St. Charles Co.). Although observed on the
Illinois side of the Riverlands complex, the immature GLAUCOUS GULL continues, with
the last sighting being on Sunday, December 17, by Shawn Clubb and Jack Cowan as
they led a WGNSS field trip.

SOUTHWEST

During the Springfield CBC on Saturday, December 16, David Ringer and Charley
Burwick found an EARED GREBE on Fellows Lake (Greene Co.). Also found in the
Fellow’s Lake area was a single AMERICAN PIPIT. In addition, the MERLIN that has
frequented the St. John’s Hospital area was discovered to have returned for at
least the fifth winter.

SOUTHEAST

During the Big Oak Tree SP CBC on Friday, December 15, the following species were
highlights of the 85 recorded; one GREAT EGRET, two BARN OWLS, one ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER, and 20 BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS.

CENTRAL / COLUMBIA AREA

Highlights of the 91 species recorded during the Columbia CBC on Saturday,
December 16, included vocalizing SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL from the City of Columbia
wetland/sewage treatment cells near the town of McBaine (Boone Co.).

KANSAS CITY AREA

Of the 78 species recorded on the Kansas City CBC on Sunday, December 17, Bob
Fisher counted 170 GREATER SCAUP present on Lake Jacomo (Jackson Co.)
Additionally, Bob observed a GRAY CATBIRD near the Blue Springs Lake swimming
beach (Jackson Co.). Other highlights included a SPOTTED TOWHEE at James A. Reed
CA (Jackson Co.) and two MERLINS were also observed on the count.

NORTHWEST

On Thursday, December 14, during the Squaw Creek CBC Andy Forbes and Brad Jacobs
found a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER and a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Big Lake SP (Holt Co.).
Birds found during this CBC at Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.) by Frank Durbian, Tommie
Rogers and Terry McNealy included three TUNDRA SWANS, twenty TRUMPETER SWANS, 76
WOOD DUCKS, two MERLINS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, two PILEATED WOODPECKERS, and a
LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Additionally, they observed an EASTERN TOWHEE near Mound City
(Holt Co.). Lastly, another highlight of this CBC was one BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON.

An adult SNOWY OWL, likely the same bird found by Frank Durbian on the east side
of Nodaway Valley CA (Nodaway Co.) on December 12, was re-located by Kyle Driggers
on Saturday, December 16. Kyle found the bird 3 miles north of Nodaway Valley CA.
To get to the area take hwy. Y north approximately three miles until hwy. Y makes
a 90 degree right turn. Follow Empire Road north at this point and look to the
east (a stubble field). The bird was observed in the area between hwy. Y, Empire
Rd., and 390th Street (pg 19 in the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetter). The owl has not
been reported since Kyle’s sighting.

During the Grand River CBC a MERLIN, an EASTERN TOWHEE, a SPOTTED TOWHEE, and a
LINCOLN’S SPARROW highlighted the 72 species recorded for the count.
