WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday December 18, 2006
This was the first weekend for Christmas Counts, and there were record numbers
of many species.
In Springfield there were 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 40 HOODED MERGANSERS, 6 EASTERN
SCREECH OWLS, 2 HERMIT THRUSHES, a VEERY, and a FOX SPARROW.
Five FISH CROWS and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were in West Springfield, a WINTER
WREN in Chicopee, a PEREGRINE FALCON, a WINTER WREN, and a PINE WARBLER in
Holyoke, and 16 HOODED MERGANSERS, 17 RUDDY DUCKS, and 2 WILSON’S SNIPEin Ludlow.
Seen in Longmeadow were a CACKLING GOOSE, 2 KILLDEER, 35 RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was noted at Quabbin Reservoir along with 4 COMMON LOONS, and 2
HORNED GREBES.
Seen at Turners Falls were a CACKLING GOOSE, a RUDDY DUCK, 2 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, 3 LESSER SCAUP, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, a BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and
several COMMON GOLDENEYES.
Best finds in the Pittsfield area were a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 2 RED-NECKED
GREBE, 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, an AMERICAN COOT, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and 6
COMMON REDPOLLS
There were many highlights in the Northampton area, including 2 WOOD DUCKS, 10
NORTHERN HARRIERS, a MERLIN, a PEREGRINE FALCON, an ICELAND GULL, a LONG-EARED
OWL, 5 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, an EASTERN PHOEBE,
2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, a HOUSE WREN, a GRAY CATBIRD, 61 AMERICAN PIPITS, 8
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 7 SNOW BUNTINGS.
