Observers: South County Christmas Bird Count, Northeastern (Inland) Bird
Count and others.....

Two Christmas Bird Counts occurred last weekend. There were numerous
highlights, many we don't have specific for however.

These include (but the list is not comprehensive):

South County:

Pelagic boat ride had SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATER and XANTUS MURRELET. CACKLING
GOOSE (San Juan Hills Golf Course), EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE (around Costco
Center Dana Point), KUMLIEN'S GULL (Doheny State Beach), BLACK OYSTERCATCHER
(Doheny State Beach), BROWN CREEPER, BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD (see previous
RBAs for location), AMERICAN REDSTART (Laguna Niguel Regional Park), SUMMER
AND WESTERN TANAGER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, BULLOCK'S ORIOLE.

Inland Count (NE Area)

An EASTERN PHOEBE (discovered by Blackburn brothers) was discovered just
outside the count area about 2 miles south of the 405 on the 133....near
where there is a lake along the road. BE CAREFUL...this is usually a
dangerous road. A male HOODED WARBLER (Jim Pike) was found in Aurora Park
in Mission Viejo. This is a small park along Marguerite Pkwy, just south of
Alicia Pkwy. A shallow ravine lined with oaks runs along the south side of
the park. So far, the bird favors the upper end, but does work the length of
the ravine. It calls alot (a slightly flatter Calif Towhee call) . Hooded
Warbler reported today as well. Also seen on the count were LEWIS'S
WOODPECKER (O'Neal Park?), MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER.

Other Areas:

Two REDDISH EGRET continue at Bolsa Chica along with a flock of REDHEAD
DUCKS. Also at Bolsa Chica was a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE (see previous RBAs for
directions). Seal Beach Naval Weapons Stateion (Restricted areas): PACIFIC
GOLDEN PLOVER, BALD EAGLE, EURASIAN WIGEON, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE,
FERRUGINOUS HAWK.
