Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Dec. 16, four BALD EAGLES (3 adult and 1 immature) were seen in the Big
Bear Basin during the first Bald Eagle count of the winter.

Earlier in the week, on Dec. 14, Sandra Remley reported seeing a juvenile
BALD EAGLE hunting in the area of the north side of Baldwin Lake, directly
across from the sewage plant at North Shore Boat Landing. A flock of
MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen in the grassy area of dry Baldwin Lake, and two
WHITE-TAILED KITE were seen in Stanfield Marsh from the northeast corner
at Division and North Shore Drive.

Chet McGaugh reported an adult BALD EAGLE at Yucaipa Regional Park. He
believes this bird was here last winter as well.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Madeline Bauer updated her continuing report of two MERLIN perched in the
same tree at 66th and William in Mira Loma near the Goose Creek Golf
Course.

John Green continued to share a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at the feeding
stations in his yard. The bird was first seen Dec. 9, and often disappears
for long periods of time.
A late post came in for a CALIFORNIA GNATCATCHER at Harford Springs. The
bird was seen on Dec. 10 in the few trees among the coastal scrub. To
reach Harford Springs, take Cajalco Rd. east from I-15 to Gavilan Springs
Rd., south to the preserve on your left.

Madeline Bauer and Barbara Iyer reported a PRAIRIE FALCON at Hidden
Valley. The bird was on top of a power pole just east of the bluffs
parking area on Dec. 20.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

Henry Detwiler sent in a report from Yuma, Az. And Imperial County, Ca. on
Dec. 15. The best bird for him in Imperial County was a RED-NECKED GREBE
at Senator Wash, not far from the dam.

Guy McCaskie reported from the Salton Sea and Imperial Valley on Dec. 13.
He found 2 SURF SCOTER at the west end of Young Rd., a female COMMON
MERGANSER on Sheldon Reservoir, the continuing ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
immediately south of Fig Lagoon, two SOLITARY SANDPIPER at the Kuhn’s
Dairy west of Seeley, one first-winter THAYER’S GULL and three first
winter GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLS along the shore between the intersection of
Lack and Lindsey and Obsidian Butte, a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET in a willow
thicket on the west side of Finney Lake, and the continuing male SUMMER
TANAGER at Wiest Lake.

Drew Pallette, using Guy’s report as a guide, also saw many of the same
birds on Dec. 15. He also reported two HOODED MERGANSER at Fig Lagoon, and
two female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS at the corner of Evan Hewes and
Westside, about a half mile east of Kuhn’s Dairy.

Bob Miller has been doing a number of bird surveys in the Algodones Dunes
area. He reports many sightings of LECONTE’S THRASHER and CRISSAL
THRASHER. There were also reports of CRISSAL THRASHER just over the
Imperial County line and into San Diego County at the Borrego settling
ponds.

Another birder sent in a report from the far east edge of Imperial County
on Dec. 21. He saw a DARK-EYED JUNCO with an all white tail in front of a
vacant trailer at 120 Clark Way in Paloverde. He also saw a female COMMON
MERGANSERin Oxbow Lake in the same area with an OSPREY and SANDHILL
CRANES. Nine WOOD DUCKS were seen in a man-made pond off the north side of
Baseline Rd. in Paloverde. The pond is in front of a trailer park about
three fourths of a mile west of the intersection of Baseline Rd. and the
road to Cibola.

Ryan Terrill and Matt Brady were birding their way to San Diego through
the Imperial Valley on Dec. 21. They spotted a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at
the “mean woman’s house” on the county line. They said the bird was in San
Diego County, but within twenty feet of the Imperial County line. They
also saw a SWAINSON’S HAWK in this same area. They echoed the report of
two HOODED MERGANSER and several CACKLING GEESE at Fig Lagoon.

Chet McGaugh spotted an immature BALD EAGLE BETWEEN Siphons 11 and 12 at
the Coachella Canal on Dec. 20. Apparently, the eagle has been there
awhile.

any new rare birds or updates on any of the birds in this report, PLEASE
LET US KNOW. We can't update reports if we don't hear from you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
