Thursday December 21, 2006 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, EARED
GREBE, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, BLACK BRANT, WESTERN KINGBIRD, seasonal
and local reports of interest, Christmas Bird Count results, and
announcements.

Two EARED GREBES continue through Dec 16 at Lakes Bay near Atlantic
City. From the intersection of Rtes 9 & 40/322 go east on 40/322
about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short distance on
Cordova to the bay: look for the birds here or opposite adjacent
blocks (DeLorme P. 71, G-16).

Three BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were found in Salem County where a small
flock spent last winter. Look for them around the farmhouse near the
corner of Supawna and Freas Roads (DeLorme P. 60, H-13). Brewer's
Blackbirds are usually found around livestock, so check the areas
with cattle and horses carefully.

A BLACK BRANT, likely a returning bird, was viewed at South Amboy's
Waterfront Park Dec 20. Look for the bird among the "pale-bellied"
Brant on the athletic fields or along the shoreline. Details can be

A returning female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was noted among a small flock
of Common Goldeneye in Sandy Hook Bay just south of SHBO Dec 15-16.
Also noted this week at the hook were all 3 Scoter species off C-lot,
AMERICAN BITTERN at Spermaceti Cove, 7 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, 4 FOX
SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 70+ SNOW BUNTINGS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR
at North Beach, and PURPLE FINCH. A free, detailed birding map of
Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for
daily reports.

A CACKLING GOOSE was found at the Longbridge Rd causeway near
Thompson Park Dec 17. A late LINCOLN'S SPARROW was noted at Thompson
Park that day.

The NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Great Swamp NWR was detected Dec 14 & 16,
seen near the ditch at the end of Pleasant Plains Rd near the Heron
Rookery Parking Lot at 7:10 am and between 12-1 pm.
.
Two CACKLING GEESE continued this week at Assiscong Marsh; also in
Hunterdon County Dec 19 were a LONG-TAILED DUCK and 2 LESSER BLACK-
BACKED GULLS at Round Valley Reservoir.
.
The Mahwah GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen again Dec 16. Look
for the bird from the end of Halifax Ave off Rte 202 in the fields
opposite Ramapo College or along the river.

The NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again near Layton in Sussex County Dec
17. Look for the bird near the intersection of Rtes 615 & 640 just
south of town (DeLorme P 18, I-10). A CACKLING GOOSE was found at
Homestead Pond at the Sussex County Library Complex Dec 19.

Christmas Bird Count Results from the weekend follow:

The NJ portion of the Lower Hudson CBC Dec 16 recorded 72 species
including 104 CANVASBACKS, 4 WILD TURKEYS, 56 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-
HERONS, MERLIN, and 3 RAVENS.
.
Sussex CBC Dec 17 had 85 species including RED-NECKED GREBE, ICELAND
GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (the latter two species on Culvers
Lake), NORTHERN SHRIKE, and 2 BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
.
Walnut Valley CBC Dec 16 recorded 85 species including GREAT EGRET, 4
GOLDEN EAGLES, LONG-EARED OWL, BARRED OWL, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
.
Northwest Hunterdon CBC Dec 17 had 92 species including CACKLING
GOOSE, REDHEAD, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
.
Assunpink CBC Dec 17 tallied 89 species including 2 PILEATED
WOODPECKERS, EASTERN PHOEBE, a WESTERN KINGBIRD at Stone Tavern Lake
in Assunpink WMA, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and
DICKCISSEL along Collier's Mills Rd.

Sandy Hook CBC Dec 16 tallied 109 species including the female
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, a male EURASIAN WIGEON off Navesink Ave in
Rumson, 2 GREAT EGRETS, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and LAPLAND LONGSPUR.
.
Lakehurst CBC Dec 16 totaled 94 species including CACKLING GOOSE,
HARLEQUIN DUCK, COMMON EIDER at Manasquan Inlet, SORA and VIRGINIA
RAILS.
.
Oceanville CBC Dec 16 had 124 species including the Lakes Bay EARED
GREBES, 7 VIRGINIA RAILS, 16 BALD EAGLES, 33 "Western" WILLETS, 21
MARBLED GODWITS, and 272 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS. To view the godwits
and other shorebirds at Brigantine Island/Absecon Inlet take Rte 30
east into Atlantic City and follow the signs for Brigantine Island.
The birds are usually seen on the mudflats west of Atlantic-
Brigantine Dr (Rte 87) shortly after crossing the Absecon Channel
Bridge. There are two one-block long side streets on the western side
of the road that offer good viewing. The best times are a few hours
before or after high tide. The birds are also sometimes found east of
the bridge. To reach that location cross the bridge over Absecon
Channel and go a half-mile to the first traffic light. Turn right and
go one block to Lagoon Dr. Turn right on Lagoon and follow it until
it ends at a sandy road. Park here and walk out to the beach (DeLorme
P. 85, B-23).
