EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, December 22.
A probable ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen on Tuesday at the
corner of John Avellar Circle and Hopkins Lane in East Orleans, but
it
has not been reported since.
Also on Tuesday, a WESTERN KINGBIRD was found along Louis Avenue
in East Gloucester.
Among the 93 species recorded on the Quincy Christmas Bird Count
conducted last Saturday, highlights included 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE,
249 RUDDY DUCKS, 36 RED-NECKED GREBES, 10 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1 MERLIN, 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 1 DOVEKIE, 1 late BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, 138 FISH CROWS, 8 WINTER WRENS, 3 ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS, and 2 FOX SPARROWS.
At the Daniel Webster Sanctuary in Marshfield there were 7 SNOW
GEESE,
3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 ROUGH-
LEGGED HAWK, 12 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and 35 EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS, and reports from Nantucket this week included 7
SNOW GEESE, roughly 500 BRANT, 56 CANVASBACKS, 6 REDHEADS,
1500 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1 MERLIN, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 2 BLACK-
HEADED GULLS, 365 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 9 LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, and 1 PALM WARBLER.
Miscellaneous reports this week have included a possible THAYER'S
GULL
in Provincetown, 3 late WILLETS in Orleans, a SNOW GOOSE in
Barnstable,
another SNOW GOOSE and roughly 600 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS in
West Bridgewater, a BALD EAGLE in Dartmouth, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL at Long Wharf in Boston, 38 CANVASBACKS at Fresh Pond in
Cambridge, a LONG-EARED OWL and a FOX SPARROW in Lexington, 30
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS in Concord, a PALM WARBLER in Carlisle,
a KING EIDER, roughly 100 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, and 3 or 4 DOVEKIES
along the northernmost points of Cape Ann in Gloucester and Rockport,
the
EARED GREBE at Niles Beach in East Gloucester, 4 ICELAND GULLS
elsewhere in Gloucester, and an AMERICAN BITTERN, a DOVEKIE, and
4 SHORT-EARED OWLS at Plum Island.
