The Santa Barbara Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count will be held
on Saturday, December 30. If you are interested in participating, please
call Joan Murdoch at 969-5132.

The PAINTED REDSTART, found on the UCSB campus more than a month ago, was
still there last Sunday the 17th. Park in the Mesa parking structure and
walk south, past Campbell Hall. Look near the Coral Tree Cafe (in the coral
trees), or further on, in the open area where the eternal flame is. A SUMMER
TANAGER is also nearby, and was also seen on Sunday, in the eucalyptus trees
in front of Ellison Hall. The LUCY'S WARBLER was also still present on
campus on Tuesday, in the bottlebrush trees inside the courtyard at the
Counseling and Career Center.

A CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR continues to be fairly easy to find in Elings
Park in Santa Barbara. Park at the end of Calle Montilla and walk up the
hill to the plateau near where the paragliders launch. It has consistently
been seen by the path next to the wooden bike ramp. The bird was present
today, about 30 feet south of the ramp.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK has returned for its 14th winter. The bird was first
found at the top of North Fairview Avenue at Cuesta Verde in Goleta. It was
not reported this week.

On Kinevan Road, off Highway 154, this morning there were 3-4 MOUNTAIN
CHICKADEES and a half-dozen GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS.

At Devereux Slough, two PEREGRINE FALCONS and a male COMMON GOLDENEYE were
present on Wednesday.

Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was found on Tuesday on the lawn at Stow Grove Park
in Goleta.

A PALM WARBLER was seen on Sunday on the north side of Phelps Road, about
100 yards east of Canon Green.

There are up to 100 BLACK SKIMMERS wintering on East Beach. Also at the
waterfront, a ROSS'S GOOSE has been hanging out on the lawn near the foot of
Stearns Wharf.

In Montecito, the female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was still present last
weekend in a pepper tree across from 555 and 565 Parra Grande Lane.

Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included one adult and
three immature BALD EAGLES, 15 WOOD DUCKS, and 2 COMMON GOLDENEYE.

In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, both the CACKLING GOOSE
and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond. The wintering GRACE'S
WARBLER, which has been in pines near Area 3, was not reported this week.

At the pasture on the entrance road to the Guadalupe Sewage Plant, there
were five SNOW GEESE and one CACKLING GOOSE yesterday. Two more ROSS'S GEESE
were at the Santa Maria Sewage Plant on Black Road, also yesterday. Also,
just east of the Gordon Sand Plant in Guadalupe, a flock of 35 MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRDSs was seen on Tuesday.

At the Santa Ynez River mouth, a female LONG-TAILED DUCK was still present
near the railroad trestle on Wednesday.

In blackberry bushes in the southeast corner of Old La Purisima Mission
Park, off south G Street in Lompoc, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued on
Wednesday.

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
