Sunday, September 11
Over the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in Metchosin were many
raptor species, including 3 adult BROAD-WINGED HAWKS.
Please note that the observatory is on restricted DND property
and is not open to the public.
Note that the VNHS and CRD Parks are again co-hosting a 'Hawkwatch'
event at the Aylard Farm entrance to East Sooke Regional Park from
9:00 to 3:00 this coming Saturday the 17th.
Saturday, September 10
In the morning at Whiffen Spit in Sooke was one PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVER.
At the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in Saanich 2 BANK SWALLOWS
were still present.
At Cattle Point in Uplands Park off Beach Drive in Oak Bay there was a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, a WHIMBREL, and 6 COMMON TERNS.
Near Viaduct Flats off Interurban Road in Saanich was a BARRED OWL.
At the Rocky Point Bird Observatory were 1 WESTERN MEADOWLARK, 1
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 adult GOLDEN EAGLE,
1 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, and 3 immature BROAD-WINGED HAWK.
Friday, September 9
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT OF TOWN): This morning an immature
BAIRD'S SPARROW was at Holden Creek Fields in Nanaimo.
The bird was seen in the second grassy field with Salicornia growing
nearby. Later efforts to relocate the bird in the afternoon were
unsuccessful. This would only be the 4th record for BC and a
Vancouver Island first.
A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and an adult BROAD-WINGED
HAWK were at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory.
Thursday, September 8
RARE BIRD ALERT (OUT of TOWN): A hatch-year female
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was briefly seen in a yard in Courtenay.
This is only the second record for Vancouver Island and the 10th for
the province.
Two BANK SWALLOWS were at the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in Saanich.
Two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were reported over the Rocky Point Bird Observatory.
Wednesday, September 7
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at the Vantreight bulb
fields off Central Saanich Road in Central Saanich; the bird was seen
near the parking lot between the gladiolas and the dirt track.
As many as 50 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were reported at Bowker
Creek in Oak Bay.
Separate reports of a single WANDERING TATTLER were reported
from Clover Point and Cattle Point and may or may not represent
the same bird.
Tuesday, September 6
RARE BIRD ALERTS: An immature LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was
seen at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory. Later that day, an ASH-
THROATED FLYCATCHER first seen Monday at Rocky Point was
seen again by two observers.
At Blenkinsop Lake in Saanich near the south end of the trestle bridge were
2 VIRGINIA RAIL.
