Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for December 22,
2006. This report covers the period from December 15th, to December 22nd,
and will be updated again on December 28th.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was found at Napatree Point in Westerly on the Christmas
Bird Count on the 17th. The bird was seen at the end of the point, around
the fort and the rocks. It was found again on the afternoon of the 18th, and
the morning of the 19th. The latest previous date for Western Kingbird for
the state was last year at Misquamicut, December 11, 2005. The only previous
record of Western Kingbird from Napatree Point was on October 28, 1989.

Highlights from the Napatree/Westerly count held on the 17th included 2
AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 WILSON'S SNIPE, 1 SHARP-TAILED SPARROW (species) and a MARSH
WREN from Quonochontaug, 1 BLACK VULTURE in Ashaway, 1 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE,
1 WOOD DUCK, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 12 CHIPPING SPARROW, 1
YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and several MARSH WREN and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.

Highlights from the Newport/Westport count, held on the 16th included: a
record high of 165 RED-THROATED LOON, 3 GREAT EGRET, 2 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON, 5 SNOW GOOSE, 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, 1 WOOD DUCK, 1 NORTHERN
SHOVELER, 1 REDHEAD, 8 AMERICAN KESTREL, 4 VIRGINIA RAIL, 8 AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 1
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 BARN OWL, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1 WINTER
WREN, 7 FOX SPARROW, 4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 32 SNOW BUNTING and 44 EASTERN
MEADOWLARK.

On the 18th, 1 COMMON MOORHEN was spotted in the pond near Aunt Carrie's
Restaurant in Point Judith.

In the Hamilton section of North Kingstown, 2 BALTIMORE ORIOLE were observed
at a feeder on the 19th.

On the 17th, 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were reported from Trustom Pond in South
Kingston.

Another BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported from Point Judith in Narraganset on
the 19th, and again on the 21st.

At Roger Wheeler State Beach in Galilee the number of LONG-TAILED DUCK
this week is up to 13.

The following were reported from Sachuest Point this week: 45 HARLEQUIN
DUCK, 60 PURPLE SANDPIPER, 6 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 2 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 1 WINTER
WREN, 2 SNOW BUNTING, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and a FOX SPARROW.

On the 21st a FORSTER'S TERN was spotted in Galilee. It was seen flying
along the channel near the parking lot of Salty Brine Beach.

Finally, 1 DOVEKIE was seen from the Block Island Ferry on the 21st, and
about 120 DOVEKIE, 8 RAZORBILL and 2 COMMOM MURRE were seen from a lobster boat
that was south of Block Island on the 22nd.
