This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, December 22nd,
2006.
An EARED GREBE was discovered off of Seal Rocks on November 30th and has
regularly been seen in that area since then. It was last reported on
December 20th. Seal Rocks is located just north of Wallis Sands, in Rye.
A BLACK-HEADED GULL, and 40 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen off of Seal Rocks in
Rye on December 19th.
An immature male KING EIDER was seen on December 18th, and a female BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE was seen on December 16th, both at Bicentennial Park in Hampton.
A LONG-EARED OWL was heard on Tabor Road in Pittsburg on December 19th.
5 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS were reported from southeastern New Hampshire on
December 16th, 3 from Greenland, one from Exeter, and one from Portsmouth.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD were
all seen in Concord on December 17th.
3 CANVASBACKS and 6 SNOW GEESE were seen, along with over 500 GREATER SCAUP,
on Great Bay on December 16th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in a field on Newington Road in Greenland, and
one was seen near Saco Lake in Crawford Notch, both on December 16th.
23 RAZORBILLS, 19 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, 52 NORTHERN GANNETS, and a GLAUCOUS GULL
were all seen from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on December 21st.
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 6 ICELAND GULLS were seen
at the Rochester Waste Water Treatment Plant on December 19th. The treatment
plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you
visit, please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that
plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the
dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east
of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
An ICELAND GULL continues to be reported from the Yankee Fisherman's Coop in
Seabrook during the past week.
22 BRANT were reported from Seabrook on December 16th.
A GADWALL was seen in Newington, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in
Portsmouth, both on December 16th.
2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen in the forest west of Trudeau Road in
Bethlehem on December 17th.
A SPRUCE GROUSE was seen near Norton Pool in Pittsburg on December 19th.
Numerous WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, PINE SISKINS and PURPLE FINCHES, and a few
EVENING GROSBEAKS were all reported from the White Mountains and Great North
Woods during the past week.
About 30 TURKEY VULTURES were seen at a roost in downtown Newmarket on
December 21st.
An AMERICAN PIPIT, a VESPER SPARROW, and a FIELD SPARROW were all seen in
Stratham on December 16th.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in Manchester on December 16th.
3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and 2 KILLDEER were seen in
the seacoast area on December 16th.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was reported from Baboosic Lake Road in Merrimack on
December 19th.
Approximately 5,000 AMERICAN ROBINS have been observed nightly, coming to a
roost site viewable from Chapman's Landing in Stratham, next to the
Squamscott River.
