Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, December 28, 2006.

CENTRE COUNTY:
Bald Eagle State Park produced 1 SURF SCOTER on December 24 (JK).

Birds seen at Millbrook Marsh on December 25 included 7 MALLARDS, 1
GREAT BLUE HERON, 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 6 BLUE JAYS, 6 AMERICAN CROWS, 2
FISH CROWS, 1 DOWNY WOODPECKER, 5 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 5 TUFTED
TITMICE, 4 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 6 CAROLINA WRENS, 1 WINTER WREN, 3
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 2 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS, 400 EUROPEAN STARLINGS, 3
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, 4 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 1 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, 6 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 15 NORTHERN CARDINALS, 1 HOUSE FINCH and 14
AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES (NB).

CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported counting 2 BLACK VULTURES, 6 TURKEY
VULTURES, 2 BALD EAGLES, 6 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 65 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 13
GOLDEN EAGLES between December 21 and 27 (CH, JL, DGr. GW, RF).

FRANKLLIN COUNTY:
A RUFFED GROUSE was seen at Stillhouse Hollow on December 23 (BK).

LANCASTER COUNTY:
Birds seen at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area between December 20
and 27 included 1000 SNOW GEESE (including Blue morph), CANADA GEESE,
100 TUNDRA SWANS, GADWALL, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARDS, 15 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS, RING-NECKED DUCK, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, COMMON
MERGANSER, 3 RUDDY DUCKS, GREAT BLUE HERON, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN
HARRIER, RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, AMERICAN COOT, 1 SANDHILL
CRANE (Dec. 20 to 26), AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, FIELD SPARROW, SONG
SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and 7 NORTHERN CARDINALS (AH, DY, TJ,
JS, CK, MO, AT).

A visit to Muddy Run on December 21 found 1 GRAY KINGBIRD and 2
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS (PF).

The Empidonax sp. flycatcher previously reported at Muddy Run was heard
calling and was giving a dry "whit" note on December 21 (BS, MH, RW,
TA). It still has not been identified, but might be a Dusky or Least
Flycatcher, but not a Hammond's, based on the call note (BS, MH).

A total of 3 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were observed in the CREP grasslands
near Wakefield on December 21 (BS, MH).

A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen over a field along Meetinghouse Road on
December 22 (PF).

Birds seen at Conejohela Flats on December 24 included 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, 3000 RING-BILLED GULLS, 50 HERRING GULLS and 20 GREAT
BLACK-BACKED GULLS (EW).

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER is coming to a house near Lititz since
December 21 and was photographed on December 27 (FH, BH). The bird is
being seen (it is not there all day, but only occasionally appears) at
the home of Joyce Sheaffer at 1209 Orchard Road, Lititz (717-627-1419).
However, she will be leaving for Florida this weekend and don't call
after Friday (FH, BH).

LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 22 BLACK VULTURES, 64
TURKEY VULTURES, 3 BALD EAGLES, 11 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 GOLDEN EAGLE
between December 21 and 26 (DS, FW, GK, RB, GL, RP).

An adult CALIFORNIA GULL (Dec. 26, only) and a second year THAYER'S GULL
(Dec. 25 to 27) were seen at Memorial Lake between December 25 and 27
along with CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARD, HOODED MERGANSER,
290 RING-BILLED GULLS, 1800 HERRING GULLS, 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
38 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS and BELTED KINGFISHER (TJ, CK, MO, AT).

MONTOUR COUNTY:
The BARNACLE GOOSE previously reported continues to be seen with
hundreds of CANADA GEESE through at least December 23 at Montour
Preserve (JK). It was NOT seen on December 24, but the following birds
were seen at Montour Preserve and Lake Chilisquaque on that day; 550
CANADA GEESE, 185 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 60 MALLARDS, 25 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 2 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 6 HOODED MERGANSER, 82 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, WILD TURKEY, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 4
RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3 AMERICAN COOT, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN
FLICKER, 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER and NORTHERN SHRIKE (MM, JB, DB).

PERRY COUNTY:
Some of the birds reported for the Bloomfield Christmas Bird Count held
on December 23 included MALLARD, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, WILD TURKEY,
GREAT BLUE HERON, BLACK VULTURE, TURKEY VULTURE, COOPER'S HAWK,
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL, ROCK PIGEON, MOURNING DOVE,
EASTERN SCREECH OWL, GREAT HORNED OWL, BELTED KINGFISHER, RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER,
PILEATED WOODPECKER, BLUE JAY, AMERICAN CROW, FISH CROW, COMMON RAVEN,
HORNED LARK, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, TUFTED
TITMOUSE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER,
CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD,
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, EUROPEAN STARLING, CEDAR WAXWING, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, NORTHERN CARDINAL, COMMON
GRACKLE, HOUSE FINCH, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and HOUSE SPARROW (CK, AT, HP,
EP).

SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Hawk Watch reported counting 2 GOLDEN EAGLES on
December 21 (LG).

SNYDER COUNTY:
There were 3 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS in a field along Zerbe Road near
Centerville Swamp on December 21 (MB).

The area around Faylor Lake produced 1 COOPER'S HAWK and 2 COMMON RAVENS
on December 27 (CK, MO).

EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen near Walker Lake
on December 27 (CK, MO).
