This is the Thursday, December 28, 2006 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a statewide
service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the birding community of
Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports submitted by ASM
members and other birders throughout the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual, or accidental
on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004 and
2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section are
listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be considered rare
only during a particular season or in a particular part of the state.) The
Missouri checklist can be accessed at: http://mobirds.org/MBRC/MOChecklist.asp **

Highlights this week include many species lingering north of their normal winter
range as a result of the mild weather conditions to date this winter.

ST. LOUIS AREA

At Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) the two adult TUNDRA SWANS found by Mike
Thelan and his SLAS field trip participants on Saturday, December 16, were again
observed by Jim and Charlene Malone on Thursday, December 28. These birds were
observed swimming in Ellis Bay with TRUMPETER SWANS. BLACK SCOTERS and SURF
SCOTERS continue to be found at Riverlands during this winter season. On
Thursday, December 21, Ryan Douglas and Phil Wire observed 6 SURF SCOTERS and 2
BLACK SCOTERS in Ellis Bay. On Monday, December 25, Charlene Malone observed 3
BLACK SCOTERS in Ellis Bay. The three BLACK SCOTERS were last reported by Joe
Eades on Tuesday, December 26. Additionally on December 26, Joe observed one SURF
SCOTER in Ellis Bay. As of Thursday, December 28, only the one SURF SCOTER had
been relocated.

Also at Riverlands MBS, near what used to be the pit toilet parking lot, Karen
Ballard had great views of a MERLIN harassing a Northern Harrier on Wednesday,
December 20. One BONAPARTE’S GULL was observed by Jim and Charlene Malone in
Ellis Bay on Thursday, December 28. Lastly, the immature GLAUCOUS GULL continues
to be observed as of Thursday, December 28. However, most sightings of this
individual are on the IL side where the bird can often be found perched on the
upriver side of the dam wall.

On Saturday, December 23, Ryan Douglas found a single HARRIS’S SPARROW along the
Grant Trail (St. Louis Co.).

The four RED CROSSBILLS found at August A. Busch Memorial CA (St. Charles Co.) on
Saturday, December 16, have not been relocated since Monday, December 18. These
birds were last observed feeding on the cones of the pines around Lake 6.

SOUTHWEST

On Saturday, December 23, Jim Wampler and his son observed one, possibly two,
PRAIRIE FALCONS near Prairie SP (Barton Co.). The first falcon was observed about
1 mile north of the state park on NW 150 N (DeLorme Atlas p. 50). Later, they
observed another PRAIRIE FALCON cruising the ridge just south of the park
headquarters. On Monday, December 25, Jim and his son returned to Prairie SP and
observed a PRAIRIE FALCON again cruising the ridge just south of the headquarters.

During the Horton-Four Rivers CBC (Vernon Co.) 91 species were recorded that
included 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 1 EASTERN PHOEBE.

1 GREATER ROADRUNNER and an EASTERN PHOEBE were recorded during the Joplin CBC
(Newton and Jasper Co.) conducted on Thursday, December 28.

Sherry McGowan observed a GREATER ROADRUNNER on Tuesday, December 26 on the south
side of Kinchloe Road, about a ¼ mile from New Home Road (Wright Co.)

CENTRAL / COLUMBIA AREA

A trip to Long Branch Lake (Macon Co.) by Susan Hazelwood and Jean Leonatti
produced HOODED MERGANSERS and a single BONAPARTE’S GULL on Thursday, December 28.

KANSAS CITY AREA

Mild weather conditions produced many seasonal rarities for the Trimble CBC on
Tuesday, December 26, including GREEN-WINGED TEAL, REDHEAD, HOODED MERGANSER,
COMMON LOON, PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, AMERICAN COOT, BONAPARTE’S GULL and HERRING GULL.
Additionally, 3 WILSON’S SNIPE were observed on December 23 and 24. However, they
were not observed during the count.

NORTHWEST

The adult SNOWY OWL, first found by Frank Durbian on the east side of Nodaway
Valley CA (Nodaway Co.) on December 12, and later re-located about 3 miles north
of Nodaway Valley CA by Kyle Driggers on Saturday, December 16, has not been
relocated at the time of this report.
