EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, December 29.
The THAYER'S GULL that was found eight days ago at McMillan Wharf in
Provincetown was still there at least as recently as Wednesday, and
birds seen
on Wednesday at First Encounter Beach in Eastham included 370
NORTHERN
GANNETS, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 RED KNOT, a remarkable
winter total of 32 POMARINE JAEGERS, 12 unidentified jaegers, 75
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, and 4 DOVEKIES.
Among 65 species recorded yesterday on the Tuckernuck Island
Christmas
Bird Count, highlights included 3 SNOW GEESE, 1 KING EIDER, roughly
100,000 COMMON EIDERS, 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, 7 TREE SWALLOWS, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE, 1 BLACK-
BELLIED PLOVER, 8 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE,
1 WINTER WREN, and 24 SNOW BUNTINGS, and reports from Nantucket
this week included 7 SNOW GEESE, 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 1 COMMON
MOORHEN, 5 KILLDEER, 700 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 26 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 1 PALM
WARBLER, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 1 WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW, and 1 FOX SPARROW.
Recent reports from Plum Island have included 1 SNOW GOOSE, 120
NORTHERN PINTAIL, 22 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 RUDDY DUCK,
3 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 12 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 2 MERLINS,
1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 ICELAND GULL, 1 DOVEKIE, 8 RAZORBILLS,
1 SNOWY OWL, 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES,
1 MARSH WREN, 185 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, an out-of-season
LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and 174 SNOW
BUNTINGS, and a report from Ipswich included an AMERICAN BITTERN,
2 TURKEY VULTURES, 1 VIRGINIA RAIL, 1 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, 100 HORNED LARKS, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 26
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
Seen in Essex were 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 6 EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS, 17 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and 1 FOX SPARROW,
and miscellaneous reports this week have included a KING EIDER and a
BLACK-HEADED GULL in Gloucester, 3 BALTIMORE ORIOLES in
Nahant, 32 LESSER SCAUP and 19 AMERICAN COOTS at Flax Pond
in Lynn, a LONG-EARED OWL in Lexington, a SNOW GOOSE in Scituate,
a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in East Bridgewater, a SHORT-EARED
OWL at Duxbury Beach, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS in Falmouth, a
HARLEQUIN DUCK, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and 6 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS in Wellfleet, a late FORSTER'S TERN and 2 THICK-
BILLED MURRES in Truro, and 1 COMMON MURRE and 3 THICK-
BILLED MURRES in Provincetown.
