Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday December 28 at 11am. To report a bird sighting, call

Sanctuary.

There have been unconfirmed sightings of a CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE at a
home in Jasper townsite. The bird was observed for 2 weeks until December 7,
then was seen by another observer on December 23. It reportedly appeared
with other birds at a ground feeder in the back yard of a town home on Aspen
Crescent in the northwest part of town. Please exercise ethical behavior if
attempting to see this bird.

Terry Korolyk saw a lone NORTHERN HARRIER on Twp Rd 270 just east of Rge Rd
254 in the Irricana Sloughs on December 26. Harriers have been scarce in our
area this winter season. TK found a total of 6 SNOWY OWLS east of Calgary on
December 26:
-- one on Hwy 817 just north of Hwy 24
-- one was opposite the Cattleland Feedlot s at Hwys 817 and 564
-- one was a few km west of Strathmore
-- two on Twp Rd 262 between Rge Rds 261 and 253
-- one on 88 Street SE just just north of Hwy 22X.

TK also found a SHORT-EARED OWL on Rge Rd 254 just north of Twp Rd 264.

Bill Diamond reported seeing 2 female LONG-TAILED DUCKS at the Southland
Park bridge early this week. On December 25 Gus Yaki et al observed a female
Long-tailed Duck, 6 GREATER SCAUP, a HARLEQUIN DUCK, a male NORTHERN
PINTAIL, a "HARLAN'S" RED-TAILED HAWK and a GYRFALCON, on a walk between
Carburn Park and Beaverdam Flats.

Phil Cram observed a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in his Mount Royal yard on
December 26. He also noted 12 AMERICAN ROBINS. Several other observers
reported robins in the city this week. The American Robin count on the
December 17 Calgary CBC was 120.

A RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD continues to show up at a feeder on Barrier Mountain
Drive in Exshaw, as reported by Bill Wilson on December 27. Bill also
reported seeing a KILLDEER at the Banff Cave and Basin the same day.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Monday January 1.
