This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was prepared Tuesday, January 2, at
4:30 pm.
Top birds this week are WESTERN/CLARK'S GREBE* in DE, EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE*, TROPICAL KINGBIRD* and PINK-SIDED JUNCO* in MD.
Other birds of interest include geese, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN, hawks, falcons, AMERICAN BITTERN, PURPLE SANDPIPER, LITTLE
and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD,
LOGGERHEAD and NORTHERN shrike, warblers, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and
SNOW BUNTINGS.
A GREBE, either WESTERN or CLARK'S* was seen in the water where DE 54
dead-ends at the beach on December 30.
The two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen sporadically during the week
on Hooper's Island Road, Dorchester Co, MD.
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD* continues to be seen in Somerset Co, MD with
sightings throughout the week. The bird was on Reading Ferry Rd
approximately 0.5 mile north of Polks Rd (DeLorme 33, C5).
A PINK-SIDED JUNCO* was picked out of a flock of DARK-EYED JUNCOS at
Sandy Point State Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on December 31.
The ROSS'S GOOSE alternated between the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary and
Schoolhouse Pond, both in Prince George's Co, MD during the week.
Another ROSS'S GOOSE was spotted south of Berlin, Worcester Co, MD on
December 28.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and a CACKLING GOOSE were in the last
stretch of the Blackwater NWR Wildlife Drive on December 29. Three
CACKLING GEESE were reported from Egypt Road, Dorchester Co, on
December 27 and another CACKLING GOOSE dropped into Schoolhouse Pond
on December 30.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was present at the Eagle's Landing Golf Course,
Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on December 27 and 29.
The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN at Accotink Bay NWR, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax
Co, VA was seen during the Fort Belvoir CBC on December 31. An
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN which could be seen from Patuxent River Park
(Jug Bay), Prince Georges Co, MD was observed on December 26 and 27.
Varying numbers of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were spotted at Blackwater
NWR, Dorchester Co, MD during the week.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along with three to four SHORT-EARED OWLS were
hunting over the marshes on Shorter's Wharf Road, Dorchester Co, on
December 27. A GOLDEN EAGLE was observed on Chancellor Pt. Road,
Talbot Co, MD on December 31.
A MERLIN was perched on a dead tree in Havre de Grace, Harford Co, MD
on December 28. Another MERLIN was seen on the Hains Point Golf
Course, DC on January 1. The PEREGRINE FALCON pair that live on/near
the American Legion Bridge were seen feeding on a smallish bird on
December 28. A PEREGRINE FALCON was observed on a telephone pole at
Indian River Inlet, DE on December 29. One PEREGRINE FALCON was seen
on the 14th Street Railroad Bridge and another was in Kenilworth Park,
DC on January 1.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was feeding along the edge of Rte 335 just north
of Hip Roof Road, Dorchester Co, on December 28. Another AMERICAN
BITTERN was seen strolling on Bestpitch Road, Dorchester Co, on
December 30.
A PURPLE SANDPIPER was spotted on the rocks beside the causeway
between Upper and Middle Hooper's Island on December 28.
LITTLE GULLS were seen at Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on
December 28. A LITTLE GULL was spotted at Indian River Inlet, DE on
December 29. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was spotted at the North East
Town Park, Cecil Co, MD on December 27. Two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
were found at Schoolhouse Pond on December 30. One LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Georgetown Reservoir while another
was at Hains Point, DC on January 1.
A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues in Vienna, VA with sightings from
December 31 and January 1.
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was a highlight of the Wetlands Route, Central
Loudoun CBC, seen on Rte 15 about 300 yards north of the Little River
Bridge (ADC 28, J7) on December 28. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along
the entrance road to Prime Hook NWR, DE on December 29.
A NASHVILLE WARBLER appeared at the Ocean City Inlet on December 28
while a WILSON'S WARBLER was seen at a feeder in Alexandria, VA on
December 26.
A small flock of AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were in the field near Old
Field Point Road and Elk Neck Elementary School, Cecil Co, on December
27. More AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen in Frederick Co, MD during
the Sugarloaf CBC on December 31.
Twenty three SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore
Co, MD on December 30.
