WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday, January 1, 2007. Happy New Year!
There were 61 species found on the Quabbin Area Christmas Count. The
highlights were 16 COMMON LOONS, 12 HORNED GREBES, 12 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 186
HOODED MERGANSERS, 7 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, 3 WINTER
WRENS, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and a HERMIT THRUSH.
There were 71 species found on the Westfield Area Christmas Count. Some
highlights were a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in Russell,
2 PURPLE FINCHES in Blandford, and a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in Granville.
Other highlights of the Westfield count were 5 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a GREATBLUE
HERON, an AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, 2 HERMIT THRUSH, and a
FIELD SPARROW in Westfield. Seen on the Southwick portion of the count were
138 COMMON MERGANSERS, a BUFFLEHEAD, a COMMON GOLDENEYE, an AMERICAN KESTREL,
3 WINTER WRENS, a GRAY CATBIRD, 42 AMERICAN PIPITS, a FOX SPARROW, 6 FIELD
SPARROWS, and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
Reported in Turners Falls were a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, an ICELAND GULL, a
female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE and 12 COMMON GOLDENEYES.
A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Brimfield, 3 SNOW GEESE were in East Longmeadow,
and a TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Springfield.
Seen in Ludlow were 2 BUFFLEHEAD, 23 HOODED MERGANSERS, 50 COMMON MERGANSERS,
3 COMMON LOONS, and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
Reported at Onota Lake in Pittsfield were 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, and 35 HOODED MERGANSERS.
