The Texas Rare Bird Alert is presented as a service of Houston Audubon Society.

In the Upper Texas Coast area some interesting flycatchers have been reported from
the Katy Prairie, west of Houston. Three GREAT KISKADEES (Pitangus sulphuratus) were
found at the corner of Elmer Bailey Road and Katy Hockley Road on Dec. 31. Also seen
were two COUCH’S KINGBIRDS (Tyrannus couchii) at the corner of Hebert and Pennick
Roads and an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (Myarchius cinerascens) on Pennick Road one
mile north of Hebert Road.

In the Rio Grande Valley the two GRAY-CROWNED YELLOWTHROATS* (Geothlypis
poliocephala) are being seen again at Sabal Palms. The birds were seen foraging off
of Vireo Lane on the west side of the trail. This is the same spot they have been
seen and heard in in the last several years.

North Central Texas is the hot spot in the state currently. A first year male SNOW
BUNTING*(Plectrophuphenux nivalis) was found at Lake Lewisville on Dec. 26. The bird
is still being seen as of today, Jan. 03. Look for the bird in the area of Hobie
Point. It is usually foraging with Killdeer. Two good gulls were found in the same
park over the weekend. A first cycle MEW GULL*(Larus canus) was seen feeding with a
large flock of Ring-billed Gulls on Sunday, Dec. 31. An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL*
(Larus ridibundus) was seen flying with Bonaparte’s Gulls on Monday, Jan. 1. To
reach the park exit I-35E, south of the Lewisville Lake bridge at FM407 (Justin
Road). FM407 goes to the west. The road at the I-35E/FM407 intersection that goes
to the east is Lake Park Road Follow this east (less than a mile) to a 4-way stop at
Mill Street. (There will be a golf course on your right.) Continue east a few feet
and turn left on Turtle Trail. This road takes you past some soccer fields
and to the gate at the entrance to Lewisville Lake Park. In Dallas two adult LITTLE
GULLS* (Larus minutus) were found on Sunday, Dec. 31 at White Rock Lake. At least
one bird is still present as of today, Jan. 3. A male COSTA‘S HUMMINGBIRD* (Calypte
costae) is being seen at a feeder in Hudson Oaks in Parker County, about 20 miles
west of Fort Worth. The address is 128 Dustin Circle. The owner welcomes birders
with the following restrictions: Please come between 2 PM and 4PM, park across the
street. Walk up the drive way and behind the woodpile. Please sign the log. This
location is about ¾ of a mile southwest of I-20 off of Hwy 5 and Bankhead Highway.

In the Trans-Pecos, another ICELAND GULL* (Larus glaucoides) has been reported in El
Paso. To reach the location where the bird is being seen exit I-10 at #13 - Sunland
Park Drive. Go west 0.5 miles to Doniphan, north on Doniphan 0.5 miles to Kappa,
then right on Kappa before making an immediate left into the parking lot of the El
Paso Desert
Botanical Gardens. The gulls frequent the marsh to the north of the parking lot
(beyond the fence). A GREATER PEWEE* (Contopus pertinax) is being seen in the Davis
Mountains. The bird was observed today foraging around the small pond at the
intersection of Hwy 118 and Arabella St. (The entrance road to the Limpia Crossing
housing area)
