This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

BELATED REPORTS:
2 Jan.

The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was seen at it's usual location. Two SNOW GEESE
were north of Samoa Boulevard. Three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were in the
just west of Arcata on the south side of Samoa Boulevard (Scott Carey).
The SUMMER TANAGER was seen at the north end of L Street in Eureka (Gary
Lester). This was the last time this bird has been reported. PLEASE REPORT
IT IF YOU SEE IT.

4 Jan.

An adult BALD EAGLE was seen at the mouth of Redwood Creek but no
interesting gulls (SLATY-BACKED or possible GREAT BLACK-BACKED) were seen
after about a 4 hour observation time (Tom Leskiw).
5 Jan.

A LONG-TAILED DUCK, 5 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 2 OSPREY, and 3
CANVASBACKS were seen from the Big Lagoon Spit, north of Trinidad (Tom
Leskiw).
The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at it's usual location on the V Street Loop
(Frank Anderson, Chet Ogan). A possible BREWER'S SPARROW was present at the
same location also (Chet Ogan).
A pale gull was photographed at the mouth of Redwood Creek with characters
of a KUMLIEN'S ICELAND GULL (Laurie Lawrence fide Ron LeValley, Jim Tietz).
The bird was not reported to the birdbox but was discussed by local and
out-of-area birders online.
6 Jan.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was the highlight gull from the Redwood Creek Mouth, near
Orick. No other interesting gulls from last week were seen (Scott Carey).
A CANVASBACK was seen on the eastern side of Klopp Lake (Janet Jones).
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen 1/4 mile over the bridge that goes to the
Seahorse Ranch (? not sure of location), on the Arcata Side (Barbara
Camann).
7 Jan.

A BARN SWALLOW was see near Cape Mendocino (Kerry Ross).
The AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was present at its usual location on the V Street
Loop (Steve Bailey).
8 Jan.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the LITTLE BLUE HERON was still present at the Alexander
Dairy; it was present just north of the complexes (Alan Barron).
9 Jan.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was see near the eastern corner of the V Street Loop. The
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was still present at the location mentioned in
previous transcripts. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on a power pole south of
the loop and 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were in the vicinity
of the loop (Steve Tucker).
