Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, January 11, 2007.
MARYLAND:
CECIL/HARFORD COUNTIES:
A visit to Conowingo Dam on January 7 found at least 30 BALD EAGLES near
the dam (LRo).
PENNSYLVANIA:
ADAMS COUNTY:
An EASTERN PHOEBE was found along Red Bridge Road at the bridge over
Conewago Creek on January 7 (MW).
BEDFORD COUNTY:
The duck pond at the Penn State Altoona campus produced MALLARDS and 1
GREEN-WINGED TEAL on January 4 (MT).
CARBON COUNTY:
Several thousand SNOW GEESE were observed flying over the Sheetz station
on MacArthur Road near Egypt on January 7 (JHo).
Parryville Dam produced 2 MUTE SWANS, 1 AMERICAN BLACK DUCK/MALLARD
hybrid and 20 HOODED MERGANSERS on January 7 (JHo).
There were 11 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 1 COMMON MERGANSER, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES and a few DARK-EYED JUNCOS along the upper rail bed trail of
the Lehigh Gap Nature Center on January 7 (JHo).
CENTRE COUNTY:
A RUFFED GROUSE, PILEATED WOODPECKER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW were found at Cold Stream Dam last weekend (TM).
Black Moshannon State Park yielded COMMON RAVEN and BROWN CREEPER last
weekend (TM).
Six CANADA GEESE, 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 3 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 140
MALLARDS, 1 NORTHERN SHOVELER, 1 RING-NECKED DUCK and 2 AMERICAN COOTS
were seen at the Centre Furnace Duck Pond between January 1 and 10 (BS,
BB, MH).
Bald Eagle State Park yielded AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, COMMON MERGANSER,
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 1 COMMON LOON, 1 HORNED GREBE, BALD EAGLES, 1
FRANKLIN'S GULL and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE between December 30 and January 7
(BS, TM, MH, RF).
Birds seen in State Game Lands 176 and at Toftrees Pond on January 4
included 250 CANADA GEESE, 15 MOURNING DOVES, 1 BELTED KINGFISHER, 4
DOWNY WOODPECKERS, 1 HARRY WOODPECKER, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 6 BLUE JAYS,
8 AMERICAN CROWS, 3 FISH CROWS, 3 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 1 TUFTED
TITMOUSE, 3 CAROLINA WRENS, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS,
15 AMERICAN ROBINS, 1 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, 1 SONG SPARROW, 15
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 10 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 10 NORTHERN CARDINALS and
5 HOUSE FINCHES (NK).
A male WOOD DUCK was observed in Sinking Creek between January 4 and 5
(LR).
A check of Millbrook Marsh on January 8 found MALLARDS, COOPER'S HAWK,
RED-TAILED HAWK, BLUE JAYS, AMERICAN CROW, FISH CROW, BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHE, AMERICAN ROBIN, NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, NORTHERN CARDINAL
and 3 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES (JV).
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen near Olive Garden on January 8 (LG).
CLINTON COUNTY:
There were a few AMERICAN PIPITS at both the South Avis fields and the
river/field road at McElhatten on January 10 (WL).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported counting 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 1
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 3 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 GOLDEN EAGLE on January 2 and
10 (CH, DG).
State Game Lands 230 yielded 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, 1
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and 2 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS on January 6 (BH, JH).
There were 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS along Route 944 east of Col. Denning
State Park on January 6 (BH, JH).
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was at Col. Denning State Park on January 6 (BH,
JH).
Stoughstown Pond yielded some KILLDEER and one unidentified peep on
January 6 (MO).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
A BALD EAGLE was observed flying over the Susquehanna River near the
mouth of Sherman's Creek on January 6 (GO).
Birds seen in the fields around Hershey School included 100 CANADA
GEESE, 1 GREAT BLUE HERON, 25 TURKEY VULTURES, 50 AMERICAN CROWS, 100
HORNED LARKS and 2 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (LU).
At least 4 different CACKLING GEESE were seen between the Hershey
Corporate Center Pond and the Hershey Lodge pond on January 9 (TJ).
A hike along the Hummel Nature Trail near Hummelstown on January 7 found
CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, TURKEY VULTURE, MOURNING DOVE, EASTERN SCREECH
OWL, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, DOWNY WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, BLUE
JAY, AMERICAN CROW, FISH CROW, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, TUFTED TITMOUSE,
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CAROLINA WREN, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, AMERICAN ROBIN, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD,
EUROPEAN STARLING, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, NORTHERN CARDINAL, HOUSE FINCH and HOUSE
SPARROW (LU).
FRANKLLIN COUNTY:
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was in Heisey Road Orchard on the evening of
January 4 (BK).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Birds found at Muddy Run Reservoir between January 2 and 4 included at
least 300 SNOW GEESE, CANADA GEESE and AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS (JS, CC).
BLACK VULTURES, TURKEY VULTURES, 1 adult BALD EAGLE, RING-BILLED GULLS
and HERRING GULLS were observed along the lower Susquehanna River on
January 2 (JS).
The previously mentioned ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER that is visiting a
house near Lititz continued to be seen through at least January 4 (TJ).
It was not seen during an extended visit on January 6 (JHo). The bird is
being seen (it is not there all day, but only occasionally appears) at
the home of Joyce Sheaffer at 1209 Orchard Road, Lititz (717-627-1419).
However, she left for Florida on December 29 and don't call her now.
Octoraro Lake produced CANADA GEESE, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, MALLARDS,
1000 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 BALD EAGLE, 300 RING-BILLED GULLS and 15
HERRING GULLS on January 4 (CC).
Power Reservoir yielded 400 SNOW GEESE, 1 CACKLING GOOSE and CANADA
GEESE on January 4 (CC).
There were 2 BALD EAGLES perched on transmission towers near the
intersection of River and Lake View Roads on January 4 (CC).
Birds seen at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area between January 4
and 10 included 18000 SNOW GEESE, 1 ROSS'S GOOSE, 200 TUNDRA SWANS, 40
GADWALL, 120 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 10 MALLARDS, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 31
NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 3 RUDDY DUCKS, 2 BALD EAGLES, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
and 1 SANDHILL CRANE (AK, LA, JHo, JV, DF, JHor, TJ).
A MERLIN was observed along Amish Road just west of Spring Garden Road
in Salisbury Township on January 5 (CC).
BALD EAGLES have returned to the Smyrna area. At least 12 BALD EAGLES
were seen in a small woodlot just below the chicken houses on Smyrna
Road near its intersection with Route 372 and White Oak Road between
January 6 and 7 (TR).
An additional 5 BALD EAGLES were found just east of the Strasburg
Railroad off of Route 741 on January 6 (TR).
The Greenfield Corporate Center Ponds produced 1 CACKLING GOOSE and 250
CANADA GEESE on January 10 (DB).
LEBANON COUNTY:
Birds seen at Memorial Lake in Fort Indiantown Gap on January 9 included
400 RING-BILLED GULLS, 750 HERRING GULLS, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
and 25 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS (TJ).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was seen along Back Mountain Road near
Belleville on January 4 (BF).
MONTOUR COUNTY:
Birds seen at Lake Chillisquaque in Montour Preserve on January 4
included 600 CANADA GEESE, 1 WOOD DUCK, 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, 200 AMERICAN
BLACK DUCKS, 400 MALLARDS, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 5 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1
COMMON GOLDENEYE, 8 HOODED MERGANSERS, 150 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 GREAT
BLUE HERON and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE (JB, DB, WL).
YORK COUNTY:
A CACKLING GOOSE was found among a flock of about 30 CANADA GEESE at
Long Arm Reservoir on January 7 (MW).
