You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Wednesday January 10, 2007. Highlights this week include
sightings of REDHEAD, COMMON EIDER, GREAT EGRET, SNOWY EGRET, EASTERN
PHOEBE, BROWN PELICAN, CACKLING GOOSE, SNOW BUNTING, SHORT-EARED OWL
and FORSTER’S TERN
The drake REDHEAD continues on Lilly Lake as of 1/7.
Also seen on Lilly Lake on 1/7 was one CACKLING GOOSE in the company
of a handful of CANADA GEESE.
Another report of CACKLING GOOSE came on 1/6 from Cedar Lake (near
the intersection of Rt. 553 and Rt. 610) in Cumberland County.
Six COMMON EIDERS continue to be reliably seen, as of 1/7, from St.
Mary’s jetty in Cape May Point.
On the topic of birds taking advantage of the warmer winter weather;
Two GREAT EGRETS were seen at the Cape May Point State Park on 1/7.
Also, 8 BROWN PELICANS were seen flying over the ocean from the State
Park on the same date.
Again on 1/7, at the Cape May Point State Park was one EASTERN PHOEBE.
Away from Cape May birds seen on 1/5;
A flock of 12 SNOW BUNTINGS continued to be seen at Stone Harbor Point.
A SNOWY EGRET was seen in the pond at the Wetlands Institute.
Two SHORT EARED OWLS at dusk seen from Reed’s Beach.
Lastly, one FORSTER’S TERN was seen in the morning also at Reed’s Beach.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Northwood Center will be CLOSED on 1/13 and 1/14.
CMBO’s bookstore hours are as follows: Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point, winter hours are Thursday-Monday 9:00-4:30.
The Center for Research and Education on Rt. 47 is Goshen, will be
CLOSED until further notice.
