This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, January 12,

Now the weather feels like winter. I wonder what it will do to the
birding possibilities this weekend as some of the unusual visitors may
just decide this is not for them and hurry on south. We are still
getting reports of a few Gray Jays, some owls, and redpolls. Noticeably
absent from the reports are the siskins. This is surely an unusual
winter.
John Quinn was birding in Wilkin County on January 8 where he found
RING-NECKED PHEASANT, and 17 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS near the Rothsay
WMA. Also in the county he saw 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.
>From Clay County on January 8 , Ben Fritchman reported 3 SHORT-EARED
OWLS at Bluestem Prairie 1.3 miles east of MN 9 on 17th Avenue. Matt
Mecklenburg reported AMERICAN ROBINS, CEDAR WAXWINGS, PURPLE FINCH, and
15-20 COMMON REDPOLLS at the MSU Science Center on January 6. He also
reported a GREAT HORNED OWL in Clay County.
Duane Olson reported a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE two miles north of Lake Park
in Becker County on January 5.
Pam Wockenfuss reported that 10 GRAY JAYS and 16 SHORT-EARED OWLS were
found on the Warren CBC in Marshall County on December 30. Alice Sather
reported that she has 3 GRAY JAYS coming to her feeder 20 miles WNW of
Warren.
A NORTHERN FLICKER is still coming to our suet feeder in rural
Pennington County.
Mary Lou Marchand in Beltrami County reported a HARRIS'S SPARROW on
January 7, 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on January 8, 35 CEDAR WAXWINGS on
January 9, and a mixed flock of waxwings on January 10.
Larry Wilebski continues to report GRAY JAYS , COMMON REDPOLLS, and
HOARY REDPOLLS at his place northwest of Lancaster. On January 6, there
were 25 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, and a RUFFED GROUSE there. SNOWY OWLS are
being seen between Orleans and Humboldt.
Beth Siverhus sent in a secondhand report of a VARIED THRUSH on January
10 at the home of Lyle Wright north of the Catholic Church in Warroad,
Roseau County. Tom Adams reported a GRAY JAY coming to a suet cake 6
miles south of Warroad, also both HOARY REDPOLLS and COMMON REDPOLLS are
being seen there.
Martin Kehoe reported that he found a male 3-TOED WOODPECKER on the Hand
Dug Ditch in the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods
county on January 9. At his cabin he saw SPRUCE GROUSE, and heard
SAW-WHET OWLS calling each night. On January 6, I saw 9 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS and several GRAY JAYS during the course of an owl survey in Lake
of the Woods County. EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen at a feeder at Shotley
on that day.
