This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday January 11, 2007 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, EARED
GREBE, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN TANAGER, seasonal and local
reports of interest, and announcements.
.
The female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues at Sandy Hook. Look for the
bird among a small COMMON GOLDENEYE flock in the bay from SHBO south
to the northern boundary of Horseshoe Cove. A free detailed birding
map of Sandy Hook is available at Sandy Hook Bird Observatory; check
the sightings log there for daily reports.

The pair of EARED GREBES was sighted this week at Lake's Bay near
Atlantic City. From the intersection of Rtes 9 & 40/322 go east on
40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short
distance on Cordova to the bay: look for the birds here or opposite
adjacent blocks (DeLorme P. 71, G-16).

In Hunterdon County the ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued through at
least Jan 7. To see the bird go to the Prallsville Mill access of
the D&R Canal State Park in Stockton and walk south along the towpath
for about one tenth of a mile. Just before reaching Ferry St. look
to where there is a chicken coop and a bittersweet plant with berries—
the bird has been viewed here around dawn & dusk. The ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER wanders widely: if not found there search along Ferry St,
Old Prallsville Rd, and Woolverton Rd.

The WESTERN TANAGER was viewed through Jan 9 at Echo Hill Park in
Clinton Twp, Hunterdon County. From the parking area walk north
through the pine grove to a field with cedar trees: the bird has been
viewed at the northeast corner with AMERICAN ROBINS and CEDAR
WAXWINGS (DeLorme P. 35, E-22).

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was discovered at Wallkill River NWR Jan 7 along
the north loop of the Dagmar Dale Trail as you descend towards the
river on the north most section of the trail (DeLorme P. 19, I-27).
.
Another NORTHERN SHRIKE was found Jan 9-10 at Big Brook Park in
Marlboro. From the intersection of Rte 79 & 520 head east on Rte 520
about a half mile and turn right into the park, which is signed “Camp
Arrowhead.” (Big Brook Park is undeveloped and has no signage). Park
near the fork in the road but do not block the gate. Follow the
right fork (a paved path) on foot for about a mile to a T
intersection and a collapsed barn foundation. The bird tends to hunt
the fields east and south of the T (DeLorme P. 44, F-4).

Two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were found at Shark River Estuary Jan
6-7. Other birds found along the North Shore this week included the
drake HARLEQUIN DUCK off Clem Conover Blvd in Deal Jan 5 and a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL on Wreck Pond.

Shorebirds noted at the south end of Brigantine Island Jan 7 were 130
+ AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 50+ WESTERN WILLETS, and 14 MARBLED
GODWITS. Also in Atlantic County 2 GOLDEN EAGLES and ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK were noted along Leed's Point Rd near Brigantine NWR Jan 7.

Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were noted at Brigantine NWR Jan 10.
.
A RED-NECKED GREBE and several SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were
reported at Tuckerton Jan 6.
.
Barnegat Light State Park Jan 7 hosted 100+ COMMON EIDERS, an
immature male KING EIDER, and 30 HARLEQUIN DUCKS.
.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was detected among a flock of waterfowl at the
southwest corner of the dredge spoil at National Park, Gloucester
County Jan 10.
.
The Pelagic Christmas Bird Count off Belmar Jan 5 recorded 7 DOVEKIES
and a RAZORBILL.
.
