In Rio Arriba County:
RY and SL reported an unexpected albino TURKEY VULTURE on Heron Lake
State Park for several days on September 13 from the Rio Chama Trailhead area.
In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake on September 8 had an immature SABINE'S GULL and
a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER. On September 14 he had a light immature LONG-TAILED
JAEGER, the plover, 13 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, still the GREAT EGRET, and an
amazing 250 WHITE PELICANS. JO on September 15 saw the jaeger, gull, and
phalaropes.
DC on September 7 had another immature SABINE'S GULL on the Vermejo
Ranch. One was there on September 13.
In Cibola County:
CJG on September 7 he had a LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKER in Grants at the El
Malpais h.q. on Roosevelt Avenue. In rainy weather at El Morro Monument on
September 9 he had the first ever BLUE GROSBEAK, two HEPATIC TANAGERS, a
CASSIN'S VIREO, and other migrants. The first TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen
September 10 with a SAVANNAH SPARROW. On September 14 SB had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK
at the El Morro visitor center in currant bushes.
In Bernalillo County:
DH on September 4 had a singing CAROLINA WREN on the Bill Spring Trail in
the Sandia Mts. about 3/4 mile up the trail from the Doc Long Picnic Area.
GP saw and heard it on September 9 on the trail about 300 yards below the
Faulty Trail sign with a NASHVILLE WARBLER. JP and JO had the wren on the 9th 30
yards and 100 yards below the Faulty Trail a half hour apart. It was not seen
on the 10th or 11th, but BW found it looking bedraggled on September 12. WW
had the warbler on the trail on September 12.
JO had two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at the ponds at Tramway and 4th in
Albuquerque on September 14.
In DeBaca County:
At the Bosque Redondo Park near Fort Sumner BW reports that much of the
understory brush has been removed, so few birds.
On September 13 WW at Sumner Lake had a PACIFIC LOON, an OSPREY, with a
CASSIN'S VIREO and a LEAST FLYCATCHER below the dam.
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 mile west of Melrose on September 4 MH, CR and BN
reported the GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. Later in the day WW, JP, and JO
reported the crested flycatcher. BW and JNM on September 7 found the crested
flycatcher, LEAST FLYCATCHER, three immature PAINTED BUNTINGS, and several
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS. JO and JP reported on September 10 two DICKCISSELS, a female
AMERICAN REDSTART, and a CASSIN'S VIREO.
At Milnesand on September 12 saw a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH and a PAINTED
BUNTING.
In Curry County:
JNM and BW on September 7 just north of Melrose and just west of NM 209
had a CACTUS WREN.
In Socorro County:
JO at his home at Luis Lopez south of Socorro had two NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSHES on September 4.
On Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on September 5 JS found a
CATBIRD where the Seasonal Road's eastbound leg turns north.
In Chaves County:
BW and JNM last had the ROSEATE SPOONBILL at Bitter Lake Refuge on
September 7 on Unit 15, the only part with water. JHo on September 14 has a good
migration at headquarters with two DICKCISSELS, a PAINTED BUNTING, and a
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. A RINGED TURTLE-DOVE was with the COLLARED DOVES at the
refuge.
JO on September 13 had a COMMON BLACK-HAWK about ten miles east of Elk a
half mile west of the junction of US83 and NM24.
In Sierra County:
At Elephant Butte Lake JO on September 7 reported a LAUGHING GULL at
Three Sisters Point and another at the east end of North Monticello Point. At the
northwest corner of the latter point he had a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
At Percha State Park CBl on September 8 had a BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER. On September 9 CBl again saw the Black-throated Green with a WHIPPOORWILL,
CASSIN'S VIREO, and female NORTHERN PARULA. MS and JZ on September 7 saw
an immature PAINTED BUNTING, the Parula, and an immature AMERICAN REDSTART. LS
on September 11 had an OSPREY and PEREGRINE. On September 14 JO saw a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. The same day CL and DSP saw the adult woodpecker, two
Peregrines, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and a PAINTED REDSTART.
In Catron County:
JH at her home east of Datil on September 5 saw a NASHVILLE WARBLER and
on September 6 a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, which was seen till September 8.
On September 7 she had at Quemado Lake three OSPREYS, two EARED GREBES,
and two WHITE-FACED IBIS.
In Doņa Ana County:
DG had at least one female DICKCISSEL in his yard north of Las Cruces on
September 3. MS reported a Dickcissel in their yard near Radium Springs on
September 10, with a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and a CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD on
September 7 and about 50 hummers still at their feeders.
At Swan Pond MS and JZ on September 7 had adult and immature GREEN
HERONS.
KS for several weeks has had four or five BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS near
Mesilla off of Union Rd. and south on Camino Seco.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs on September 5 CR and BN found a RED-EYED VIREO,
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and DICKCISSELS.
In Lea County:
BN and CR on September 5 had an amazing 137 SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS in
a flock at mile marker 150 ten to 12 miles east of Maljamar!
JO on September 12 had an immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at the
Tatum sewage ponds. RC did not see it there on September 13.

On Saturday, September 24, Sangre de Cristo will bird the Las Vegas Refuge.

On Saturday, September 24, Dave Cleary will lead a trip on the Maxwell Refuge

On the weekend of September 24-25 Mesilla Valley explores the area of Bitter
Lake Refuge with Bottomless Lakes and the Dexter Fish Hatchery near Roswell.
