Thursday, January 18, at 10:50 a.m. To report a bird sighting, leave a message

There were 2 separate reports this week of 2 unusual winter season Sparrows within
Calgary city limits. Andy Hill, who lives in the Marda Loop area of Calgary,
reported that the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW he saw in his yard in mid to late December
was there again on both days of Monday, January 15 and Tuesday, January 16. Three
other WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were found in the City on the December 17 Christmas
Bird Count. Those interested in seeing Andy's bird can call him at 228-2184. Ray
Wershler found a SONG SPARROW in SE Calgary on Wednesday, January 17. The bird was
in weedy growth on the west side of the Bow River, approximately 75 metres south of
the train crossing running across the river at the north end of Beaverdam Flats.
The only other known report of this species in our birding area this season was a
bird on the Dec 17 CBC.
George Garden reported a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was near the Hwy 68 & Powderface Trail
junction west of Calgary on Sunday, January 14. The bird was on the Powderface
Trail just before the equestrian turnoff.
Mike Sturk, who observed a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in the Raven Rocks area east of Bebo
Grove in West Fish Creek PP on Jan 11, observed 2 SOLITAIRE'S there on Wednesday,
Jan 17.
The HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK that has been wintering along the Bow River in SE
Calgary was observed by Ray Wershler in the Beaverdam Flats area on Wednesday,
January 17.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, January 22.
BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month, September - May at 7:30 pm,
