This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 16, 2005
covering the period September 9 - 15, 2005.
Two GREAT EGRETS were observed on Malletts Creek in Colchester
on September 8th, 3 at the Farrell Access at Dead Creek on the 9th and 1
on the Mississquoi River in Swanton, next to Route 78, on the 14th. Three
TURKEY VULTURES were seen over Groton State Forest on September 11th, and
3 were circling overhead in West Brattleboro on the 12th.
Twenty-four SNOW GEESE were seen flying over Norwich on
September 10th. Thirty-one WOOD DUCKS were spotted on Lefferts Pond
September 11th, and 7 were observed off Grand Isle on the 13th. One
GREATER SCAUP was sighted off Grand Isle on the 9th of September, along
with 21 COMMON MERGANSERS. One WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen off Grand
Isle on September 15th.
Four BALD EAGLES were observed migrating over Mt. Philo on
September 10th during their hawk watch. There were several SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK sightings this week in Vermont including one in Westford and one in
West Brattleboro on September 10th, juveniles in Westford on the 9th and
10th, and in South Duxbury on the 11th . One COOPER'S HAWK was seen in
Grand Isle on September 9th, and 2 on the 12th. An adult and juvenile
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were sighted in Westford on the 10th of September. On
September 10th at the Mt Philo hawk watch 516 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were
observed. One BROAD-WINGED HAWK was also seen in Westford on the 10th, 2
more on the 11th, and 5 were observed in South Duxbury on the 11th and
one was seen in Groton State Forest on the 12th. Two RED-TAILED HAWKS
were sighted in Grand Isle on September 9th, and one in Groton State
Forest on the 12th. A MERLIN was seen in Burlington as well as in Red
Rocks Park in South Burlington this week. A PEREGRINE FALCON was observed
at the Mississquoi National Wildlife Refuge as well as in Long Marsh Bay
at the Mississquoi Delta on September 12th.
A RUFFED GROUSE was heard drumming in Groton State Forest on
September 12th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, several SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS and 2
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen off Charlotte Town Beach on September 9th.
A SCREECH OWL was calling in Alburg on the 11th of September.
BARRED OWLS have been heard in Hartland (1) and Groton State Forest (3)
this week, and a NORTHERN SAW-WHET owl was also heard in Groton State
Forest.
Two ALDER FLYCATCHERS were sighted at West Rutland Marsh on
September 15th.
A BROWN THRASHER was seen in Rochester on September 9th.
Warblers continue coming through Vermont in good numbers.

NORTHERN PARULA (Lefferts Pond, Chittenden), YELLOW, CHESTNUT-SIDED,
MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED GREEN,
BLACKBURNIAN, PINE (Red Rocks Park, South Burlington), BAY-BREASTED (South
Duxbury), BLACKPOLL, BLACK-AND-WHITE, AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT and WILSON'S (South Duxbury).
