Wednesday January 17, 2007 with reports of BAND-TAILED PIGEON,
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, WESTERN TANAGER,
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest, and
announcements.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON has been seen at a feeder on Stevens St in West
Cape May Jan 16-17 - call the CMBO Hotline for details.
.
Two male BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were noted Jan 16 near Pennsville in
Salem County. Look for them around the farmhouse near the corner of
Supawna and Freas Roads (DeLorme P. 60, H-13). BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS
are usually found around livestock, so check the areas with cattle/
horses carefully.

The female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was observed Jan 15 at Sandy Hook.
Look for the bird among a small COMMON GOLDENEYE flock in the bay
from SHBO south to the northern boundary of Horseshoe Cove. Also at
the hook this week were 22 SNOW BUNTINGS at Gunnison Beach. A free
detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at Sandy Hook Bird
Observatory; check the sightings log there for daily reports.

In Hunterdon County the ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued through at
least Jan 15. To see the bird go to the Prallsville Mill access of
the D&R Canal State Park in Stockton and walk south along the towpath
for about one tenth of a mile. Just before reaching Ferry St. look
to where there is a chicken coop and a bittersweet plant with berries
- the bird has been viewed here around dawn & dusk. The ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER wanders widely: if not found there search along Ferry St,
Old Prallsville Rd, and Woolverton Rd.

The WESTERN TANAGER was viewed through Jan 16 at Echo Hill Park in
Clinton Twp, Hunterdon County. From the parking area walk north
through the pine grove to a field with cedar trees: the bird has been
viewed at the northeast corner with AMERICAN ROBINS and CEDAR
WAXWINGS (DeLorme P. 35, E-22).

A NORTHERN SHRIKE continues through Jan 16 at Big Brook Park in
Marlboro. From the intersection of Rte 79 & 520 head east on Rte 520
about a half mile and turn right into the park, which is signed “Camp
Arrowhead.” (Big Brook Park is undeveloped and has no signage). Park
near the fork in the road but do not block the gate. Follow the
right fork (a paved path) on foot for about half a mile to a T
intersection and a collapsed barn foundation. The bird tends to hunt
the fields east and south of the T (DeLorme P. 44, F-4).

The immature male EURASIAN WIGEON was noted again on the North Shore
at Sylvan Lake in Bradley Beach Jan 15. Other birds noted on the
North Shore this week included the male HARLEQUIN DUCK off Clem
Conover Blvd in Deal and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Wreck Pond.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was discovered at a pond/lagoon off
Fischer Blvd in Toms River Jan 13-16. The bird is being viewed at
the small lagoon adjacent to the intersection of Golden Dr and Louise
St.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
A pelagic trip is scheduled from Belmar February 11 in search of
Razorbill, Dovekie, other alcids, gulls, and other winter seabirds.
