Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Jan. 15, a group of 5 WOOD DUCK, 3 male and 2 female, were seen at the
ponds around the VA Hospital in Loma Linda. The previous week a HOODED
MERGANSER had been seen,
but was not refound this week. The hospital is on Barton Road between
Mountain View and Anderson. The ponds almost surround the building, but
the ducks are on the south side of the hospital.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Jan. 15, from Lake Tamarisk at Desert Center, there were 14 COMMON
MERGANSER, 1 female HOODED MERGANSER, 1 REDHEAD, and 6 CANVASBACKS.

Jan. 16, from the San Jacinto Wildlife Area, there was a report of
numerous MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD all along Davis Rd. An EASTERN PHOEBE was also
seen at the cluster of mobile home and trailers approximately ½ mile north
of the wildlife refuge.

The following reports were posted from Blythe: Jan. 16—WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW. Jan. 15, there was a report of AMERICAN ROBIN, YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER (2, at Mayflower Park), VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW (at the fish farm)
and 3 STILT SANDPIPER.

The ag ponds at UCR had 1 female HOODED MERGANSER and 30 CANADA GEESE on
Jan. 12.

About 16 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were seen on Jan. 15 on the asphalt and wires
at the end of Tesquesquite Ave. in Riverside. There birds were where a
gate blocks the road and the bike trail starts.

Guy McCaskie reported a BLACK-HEADED GULL at the mouth of the Whitewater
River on Jan. 16. The bird had been seen the previous day at the Kent
Seatech Fish Farm. Access to the river mouth is from the east dike, but is
difficult because of trespassing issues. If you are checking at the fish
farm, it is a few miles south of the Mecca Travel Center and immediately
east of the 86S Expressway. Ask for permission to enter via the intercom
at the gate. The staff has been friendly to birders in the past. Guy also
located a THAYER’S GULL at the mouth of the Whitewater River, and an adult
BALD EAGLE. All in all, Guy saw 13 species of gulls on the 16th.

There is a correction to the post asking for information about the mystery
weaver bird that resembles a vireo. The nest was seen outside the entrance
to the Cabot museum, which faces the main street with the parking lot on
the right, not the left. Birders who visit the area and see the nest are
asked to post personal observations.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

Guy McCaskie reported a LITTLE GULL between the west ends of Bowles and
Young on Jan. 16. He also saw a MEW GULL at the southwest corner of
Obsidian Butte, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 1 adult at Red Hill and 1
second winter bird at Obsidian Butte, a GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL a first
winter bird at Red Hill, and a GLAUCOUS GULL adult at Red Hill. Outside
the gull category, he saw the continuing ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Fig Lagoon,
and EASTERN PHOEBE along McDonald Rd. between English and Davis, a
TROPICAL KINGBIRD at Fig Lagoon, and an adult AMERICAN REDSTART at the
Wister Unit HQs.

A WINGS group saw a LITTLE GULL on the pond next to the shore in the area
on the west sides of Kornbloom Rd. halfway between Bowles and Young.
Driving from there north to Obsidian Butte, they saw a MEW GULL and a
first winter THAYER’S GULL. 2 SPRAGUE’S PIPIT were seen in the grass at
the southwest corner of Hwy 111 and Sinclair. A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was
a Raimer Lake, a “SOOTY” FOX SPARROW was at the Refuge HQs, a female RUDDY
GROUND-DOVE was on the west side of Calipatria, a CACKLING GOOSE was at
Unit 1, and the continuing GRAY FLYCATCHER was seen at Cattle Call Park in
Brawley. All sightings were on Jan. 15.

A San Bernardino Valley Audubon trip spotted a ROSEATE SPOONBILL along the
road in a ditch alongside Schrimpf Rd. between Davis and English. The bird
flew to the southwest. A BALD EAGLE was also seen along Pound between
Davis and English. At Red Hill, the group saw a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
to the south of the boat launch, LARGE-BILLED SAVANAH SPARROW, and at
least 6 RUDDY TURNSTONE. A BROWN CREEPER was at the refuge HQs, as was a
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW. 30 SANDHILL CRANE were at Unit 1, 2 AMERICAN
REDSTART were at the Wister Unit, and a WHITE-TAILED KITE was along Lack
just north of Bannister. All sightings were on Jan. 13

any new rare birds or updates on any of the birds in this report, PLEASE
LET US KNOW. We can't update reports if we don't hear from you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
